We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started making hair butter in 2010 after my journey started long ago in high school when speaking with my, grandmother whom I call “Grammy,” not knowing at the time these conversations would be so instrumental. I mentioned that I was suffering from a hair-shedding problem, after further discussion, Grammy confessed that she also had a problem area that would shed after she would have her hair straightened. In further conversation, Grammy spoke of a homemade remedy that she used that a family member gave her, but she could only remember a few names and never seemed to think of all the ingredients that were in it. I really hoped that one day she could remember those other ingredients, so I could use them and my hair could grow like hers. One of my memories of Grammy was her hair and how long and straight it was, without a relaxer! She would always ask me to comb her hair; I thought her hair was so pretty.
Sadly, Grammy passed away on February 23, 2012, and I deeply miss her. As a service to her, I decided that I would find a way to implement her in my life. I knew that she would always be in my heart, but I wanted to continue to feel her presence. I always wanted her around.
A week before Grammy passed away, I decided to start making some more hair butter and name it. After all, my hair product was becoming popular among coworkers, family, and friends. I wanted to have a name for it so when people asked me what I used on my hair, I could tell them. However, after several attempts, I couldn’t think of anything.
A few days after Grammy’s service, I decided to try it again. It meant more to me this time because I wanted to implement Grammy’s name into the product name. I finally came up with V. I chose the name C because I wanted to combine the word Natural, for the ingredients used in the product; my Grammy’s middle name, which is Lee; and her last name, which is Goode (pronounced Good). I told Grammy that she must have been talking to me because I truly felt her spirit that night.
My Grammy is the inspiration behind Naturallee Goode ™; she is the angel that now watches over me. I am inspired to follow my dream. I was always a shy person and afraid of failure, but Grammy would always tell me to just do my best with everything I do. Therefore, I decided to try it. Life is too short and you have to cherish every moment.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Naturallee Goode is a brand that focuses on loving yourself. The Naturallee Goode products are handcrafted with natural ingredients to help people embrace their natural hair and beauty. To me, it’s a movement to be empowered. It’s a movement to be Naturallee Beautiful and to love everything Natural. I want my brand to be more than natural hair and body products. I want it to be an inspirational brand. I want Naturallee Goode to be a statement. Naturallee Goode is naturallee making a difference.
One of my proud moments is when a lady told me that Goode Butter saved her. She was about to cut her hair and she tried my product and it changed her life. Sometimes I get discouraged, but every time I feel this way someone would tell me how they love Naturallee Goode products and how it has helped them.
My biggest challenge is overcoming being shy. I am a super shy person and this brand is helping me be more outgoing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to take this journey. I would love to thank my family for all the love and support. Thank you to my Mom and Uncle for always helping me and being my cheerleader. I want to say thank you to my husband for supporting me in pursuing my dreams. Also, I want to thank my 5-year-old daughter that at a young age continues to keep me on my toes and is always willing to help pass out samples no matter what. I want to thank Central Alabama Redevelopment Alliance for allowing me to be a part of the cohort program. I would like to thank MIracle with Taste Drink Well for thinking of me for the Shout out series and keeping me motivated. Thank you, Paquita with Rena’s Couture for always encouraging me and reminding me to win with a purpose. Thank you Neka and Ebony for ultimately pushing me to work my first pop-up at our women’s conference at church. Thank you to my friends who continue to show Naturallee Goode some love!
