We had the good fortune of connecting with Mercedez Starr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mercedez, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is negativity. Being told I wouldn’t make it because I am a dominant female unwilling to be stereotypically sexualized. Being told my music is too different… having friends and family fold… leaving me high and dry… Made me want to go a trillion times harder. Im a show and prove kinda individual. The negativity fuels me!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an all around artist. I paint, draw, rap, sing, graphics, videographer and whatever else I need to be to succeed. What sets me apart from other artist is my eye for creativity. Im not afraid to step out the box and stay out the box. I like to implement different vocal styles, tones, inflections, etc. to give my music a full body, auditory and visual experience. Im most proud of releasing my 1st EP. Every song has a beat crafted by my younger brother. It was a very long time coming. This project went through several trials and tribulation. Different studios, initial beats and failed features but it came out to be AMAZING! Getting this project to where I needed it to be was no easy task. I became whoever I needed to be and reached out to who could help me achieve my goal. I want the world to know that im here, Im queer and I aint going ANYWHEREEEEE!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Im from Washington DC and currently reside in MD. I host 4 days a week so we would start there because our parties stay lit. Next, I would say we would have to hit the national harbor grab some eats and kick back for tunes or a movie. Paddle boats, yacht parties you name it!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my friend and partner in crime CEO Blade. She helped me break out of my shell and stop living in the shadows. She gave me a platform to shine and never stopped giving me an opportunity. She has shown me infinite love and support. Showed me that its not about the Day 1s its about who keep it A1!
