We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose an artist’s path over a traditional career because creativity is at the core of who I am. Styling isn’t just about clothing for me—it’s about storytelling, self-expression, and bringing a vision to life. While I have the skills and experience to thrive in structured roles – I worked in Human Resources for almost 15 years before transitioning into styling, the artistic world allows me the freedom to shape my own path. I enjoy impacting people through style, and building something that’s uniquely mine. Plus, the excitement of working with diverse clients keeps my work dynamic and fulfilling. I was never fulfilled sitting behind a desk in corporate fields of work.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
MJ Style Firm is more than my styling service company —it’s a fusion of storytelling, strategy, and style. As a wardrobe stylist, TV/film costumer, and founder of MJ Style Firm, I specialize in curating looks that not only enhance my clients’ image but also tell their unique stories. Whether working with global brands, celebrity clients, or business professionals, my approach is always intentional, blending creativity with a deep understanding of personal and brand identity.

What sets the business apart is my ability to merge my background in Human Resources and recruitment with my work in fashion. I don’t just style—I strategize, ensuring that every look aligns with the message my clients want to project. My passion for inclusivity also drives my work; I’m committed to creating opportunities for underrepresented talent in production, ensuring that diversity isn’t just a trend but a standard.

The journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. Transitioning from corporate to creative came with its challenges—gaining credibility, securing high-profile clients, and building a business from the ground up. But I overcame these hurdles through persistence, networking, and delivering undeniable results. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that relationships matter. Many of my opportunities have come from photographers, creatives, and industry peers mentioning my name in rooms I wasn’t in. That kind of organic support is priceless, and it’s a testament to the power of collaboration and reputation.

What I want the world to know about my brand is this: Style is more than clothing—it’s confidence, presence, and power. MJ Style Firm is built on the belief that what you wear should not only reflect who you are but also elevate where you’re going. Whether styling for a major campaign, an executive boardroom, or a red carpet, I bring a level of intention, expertise, and artistry that ensures my clients look and feel their best.

I’m excited for what’s ahead—expanding my brand, working with more high-profile clients, and continuing to push creative boundaries. The best part? I’m just getting started I’m really looking forward to working with more professional sports clients in the near future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Atlanta for a week, I’d make sure they got the perfect mix of culture, sports, great food, and a little relaxation—because balance is key!

Day 1: Arrival & Classic ATL Eats
We’d kick things off with a welcome dinner at Pappasito’s Cantina—because no trip is complete without good Mexican food. Fresh margaritas, sizzling fajitas, and a fun vibe set the tone for the week.

Day 2: Culture & Creativity
I’d take them to explore The High Museum of Art or The SCAD FASH Museum, where fashion, photography, and art collide. For lunch, we’d stop by The Garden Room for a chic, aesthetic dining experience. Later, we’d check out The Trap Music Museum for a dose of Atlanta’s hip-hop culture.

Day 3: Game Day Energy
Depending on the season, we’d catch a Falcons, Hawks, or Atlanta United game because the city’s sports energy is unmatched. Before the game, we’d grab wings from J.R. Crickets or hit The Battery if it’s baseball season.

Day 4: Outdoor Vibes & Relaxation
We’d start with a morning golf lesson (because I’m working on my game this year) and then unwind at Piedmont Park or The Beltline for a scenic stroll. A stop at New Realm Brewery for drinks on the rooftop would round out the day.

Day 5: Luxury & Shopping
A trip to Buckhead Village for high-end shopping, followed by a spa day at The Waldorf Astoria or The St. Regis Spa—because self-care is a must. Dinner at Hal’s for a top-tier steakhouse experience.

Day 6: Hidden Gems & Nightlife
We’d explore more local favorites, like brunch at Breakfast at Barney’s or Le Petit Marché, followed by a visit to Ponce City Market or a lowkey speakeasy like Red Phone Booth for cocktails.

Day 7: Farewell Brunch & Reflecting on a Great Week
Before heading out, we’d do one last brunch at South City Kitchen—because Southern comfort food is always a good idea.

Atlanta has something for everyone, but for me, it’s all about great food, exciting experiences, and moments that feel effortless yet memorable.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Success is never a solo journey. I’m beyond grateful for the photographers who have not only captured my work but have spoken my name in rooms I wasn’t in. Their support, referrals, and belief in my craft have made all the difference. This journey is built on collaboration, and I don’t take it for granted. Mecca Gamble is one photographer who comes to mind among so many more.
Thank you for seeing me, for mentioning me, and for being part of my story. Here’s to more magic together!
