We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind my business was pretty straightforward and simple. As a single mom transitioning from working in Corporate America, I desired to build a business that supports other minority women. I aimed for women and mothers to utilize their everyday talents to gain financial independence while also providing flexible work options.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Improve it
Moms Do It Best is a cleaning company with a unique mission of providing flexible employment opportunities to single mothers. We strive to offer a supportive work environment and fair wages to all of our employees.
As a female entrepreneur, I have faced various challenges while entering into this industry. Competing with larger and well-known brands or businesses that hire via word of mouth used to be a major challenge for me. I sought potential clients on my own through social media. Thankfully over the years they have been extremely satisfied with their cleaning services. Happy customers have been great at helping growing business within and providing quality referrals. I have been able to provide competitive pricing guidelines without compromising the value of my business. Additionally, I have work really hard to find, create, and train a professional team that share my vision.
Through my journey, I have learned many valuable lessons and I’m still learning more each day! Two are the importance of time and money management skills. Planning ahead, leaving room for unexpected events, and searching for the best supply prices while also maintaining an accurate expense report have been crucial. I wear many hats!
Something I would like the world to know about Moms Do It Best is we are committed to providing the best services while creating a positive impact on our employees and the community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend knows that I’m super spontaneous, but there are some places that we just have to go! Here are a few of my must-haves, in no particular order. Breakfast at Toast on Lenox is a must. You have to try their catfish and grits topped with grilled shrimp, paired with a lemon drop martini with anejo tequila.
A spa day at Iwi Fresh, drinks on the rooftop at Spaceman, and at the bar at Tulum, shopping at Lenox & Phipps Plaza, and hopefully, we can catch an Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Falcons, or Atlanta United game. A walk around the Beltline, pizza at Humble Pie, a movie at IPIC Theaters, dinner at Saint & Council, and Jeni’s Ice Cream (can you tell I like to eat?) are also on my list. I love art and live music, so the other adventures for the week will be impromptu!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout and motivation towards my business and brand is my dedication to my son Saxton. He was only five years old when I started my business, and now he is almost twelve. Time really flies! Being a dedicated mother, I wanted to make sure that I never missed any of his school or sporting events. I also desired to be the kind of parent my son could look up to and show him what it really takes to be a successful black entrepreneur. My son is my daily motivation and a constant reminder that, even during tough times, giving up is never an option.
