We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Kennebrew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The decision to start my own business full-time actually grew out of something I was already doing on the side. I had been running my tax and financial services business part-time while working in corporate project management. Over time, it became clear that I wanted more control over how I served people—and I realized that I could create something more aligned with my values if I fully committed.

Helping individuals and small business owners navigate their finances was something I genuinely enjoyed, and I kept seeing how much clarity and relief it brought them. That gave me the confidence to take the leap. Going full-time wasn’t just about entrepreneurship—it was about being intentional with my time, my impact, and the way I show up for my clients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
MBK Financial Services is more than just a tax and accounting firm—it’s a space where people can come to feel seen, heard, and supported around their money. I specialize in helping individuals and small business owners not only stay compliant, but truly understand their numbers, build tax-efficient strategies, and gain clarity and confidence in their financial decisions.

What sets us apart is that we lead with compassion. I meet people where they are, without judgment, and walk with them through the process. Money can be overwhelming or even emotional, especially for entrepreneurs trying to do it all. I focus on simplifying complex information, educating clients, and being a trusted partner—not just a service provider.

The road to building my business hasn’t been easy. I transitioned from a stable corporate career into full-time entrepreneurship, and that came with growing pains: long hours, self-doubt, and learning how to balance being the CEO, tax advisor, marketer, and admin all in one. But I kept going because I knew this work mattered. I surrounded myself with mentors, invested in systems, and stayed rooted in my “why.”

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that clarity is power. When people understand their finances, they make better decisions—and that’s where real transformation happens. I want the world to know that MBK Financial is here to support that transformation. We’re not just about the numbers—we’re about empowering people to build legacies, reduce stress, and move forward with confidence.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a proud Gwinnett native, I’d absolutely roll out the red carpet for my best friend’s visit! We’d kick off the week in Duluth, strolling around the Town Green, grabbing coffee from Boulder Creek Coffee, and soaking in the local charm. For dinner, we’d head over to Kani House in Johns Creek for some lively hibachi fun—it’s always a good time with great food and energy.

For dessert, we’d swing by Sweet Hut Bakery & Cafe in Duluth for boba tea and fresh pastries—they’re open late and perfect for an after-dinner treat. One evening we’d venture into Downtown Norcross and enjoy a delicious meal at Stage, followed by handcrafted ice cream from Butter & Cream right down the street.

Midweek, we’d take a food tour down Buford Highway, exploring everything from Korean BBQ to authentic tacos and pho. We’d stop by H Mart to browse unique snacks and beauty finds. For fresh air and relaxation, we’d spend a day at Little Mulberry Park or rent bikes and enjoy the art walk at Suwanee Town Center.

We’d also fit in something fun—maybe an escape room, ax throwing, or a comedy show at Gas South Theater. To close out the week, we’d keep it simple and local: brunch at First Watch, a little shopping at The Forum, and a cozy evening catching up over wine or mocktails at one of Gwinnett’s many laid-back spots.

There’s so much flavor, culture, and fun packed into this area—and I’d make sure my friend left feeling like they experienced the real Gwinnett: diverse, welcoming, and full of good vibes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, my shoutout goes to my dad. He was the definition of hard work, integrity, and quiet strength. He didn’t just talk about doing the right thing—he lived it every single day. He taught me how to take pride in my work, how to keep my word, and how to treat people with kindness and respect, no matter their background.

His example shaped the way I run my business and how I show up for my clients. Even now, when I face tough decisions or challenging days, I often find myself asking, “What would Dad do?” His influence is woven into everything I do, and I’m so grateful for the values and foundation he gave me. This journey is absolutely part of his legacy.
