We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Ziegenmeyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Elite Skillz Sport and Fitness was created with one simple mission in mind, to change lives by helping them become the best version of themselves!
I also wanted to make a space that was safe, fun, and affordable where kids could participate in a variety
of activities for one all inclusive price. With this goal in mind, we added Elite Kidz After School and
Summer Camp.
We are a two-part business.
Part One: Elite Skillz Sports and Fitness. We offer programs for children and adults in the morning and
evenings. Those programs include Traditional Karate, Ninja Obstacle, Kickboxing, and Yoga.
We believe in teaching the way kids learn, through play. By creating a fun and engaging programs that focus on each
age groups stage of development, we set children up for success while developing their coordination,
agility, flexibility, fine and gross motor skills, balance, and strength, all while learning valuable character
skills.
In our adult programs there is no judgment. Just a community of like minded humans supporting each other in becoming their best self! Each class is fun and uplifting for your mind, body and soul.
Part Two: Elite Kidz After School and Summer Camp. We are an extended day learning facility for
children grades K-5 th (5-12 yrs). We meet the needs of busy families by providing a fun and safe space
where kids can participate in a variety of enrichment programs including karate, dance, tumbling, art, parkour and a variety of sports. Children have open time for homework and get participate in a variety of activities for one affordable all- inclusive price. We also are open for school break camps, parents night out, and a variety of community events.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my journey in karate in my early 20’s and picked up were I left off 12 years later. At the time I was working as a project manager at a graphic communication company. I was invited to assist in teaching the kids karate classes in the evenings and fell in love with it! I guess you can say the rest is history! I went to part time at the graphic communications company and eventually quit to manage and teach at the karate school full time.
I had a vision to own my own studio that offered Karate, an After School Program and School Break Camps that were focused on helping kids become the best version of themselves. It was not an easy choice to leave the place that I had called home for 10 years but I decided to see it through. At almost 50 years old it almost seemed crazy. It was not where I thought I would be at this stage in my life but here I am and I am loving every minute of it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I chose Roswell as the location for my studio and the more time I spend here the more I fall in love with it. The community has been so welcoming and downtown has become my favorite lunch and dinner hang out spot!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many people that have supported me and my vision throughout this entire process! My husband, parents, friends, and mentors have all been behind me this entire way. Without them believing in me, I don’t think I would have taken this leap of faith.
