We had the good fortune of connecting with Mei Dunlop and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mei, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In 2008, I was laid off from my previous job of 6 years. Around that time I wanted to start my own business but didn’t know how to start or what to do. So when I was laid off I took it as a sign that I needed to start my own business regardless of whether I knew which direction I was going to go.
I did take a self employment program so I can learn the ropes and the rest was history.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a Creativepreneur all my life but didn’t officially brave the self employment life until 2010 when the entire organization was laid off due to downsizing.
In the past decade, I’ve struggled like most small business owners on many things like self worth, how to value my time, my work and work on the business instead of in the business.
Practicing radical self care along with having a supportive group of people and system in my circle have enable me to fail better. I’m not afraid of making mistakes and have developed a resilient mindset that is expansive, optimistic and resilient.
My mantra and beliefs is life: Let’s root for each other and watch each other grow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
EEp.. so I’m a homebody and I love where I live. We moved out into a rural area where most feel like they’ve gone camping and there’s very few street lights along our streets.
Anyone who came to visit would get a tour of our acreage property before we venture out anywhere else on the island.
I’m all for tailoring each person’s experience so depending on what the person’s into, it’s either outdoor hikes and excursions, eating at a few popular places in town, or local market shopping!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friend is my life line and the person behind my current mindset to keep going and growing. I am resilient but I don’t think I would have done it without her introducing me to stoicism.
