We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan VanDyke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
I think my biggest goal is to be able to make a living off of acting. To be a famous actress would have been my answer if you asked 16 year old Megan. As I have gotten older I realize that my worth in acting isn’t defined by the amount of money that I am making or even how high up on the call sheet I am. Success to me and my ultimate goal is just to do what I love every day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At the moment, I am most proud of the community I have started to make on my own. We all work together to create our own stories and bring them to life, helping each other find resources or be our own. Celebrating our wins and mourning the losses. Which brings me into the biggest lesson I learned so far and is something I still struggle with every now and then. Not comparing myself to others. Especially in acting there is no rule book, no linear progression to success. My win might look different than someone else in my demographic and that is okay!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first stop would have to be little five points. I love how down to earth it is and unique each of the shops are and it is absolutely the best place for day drinking. Ponce city market would have to be the next place we visit and head up the belt line. Ponce is the exact opposite of little five but still hold a sentimental place in my heart as a really unique Atlanta experience. Being able to buy beer, book and food all in one spot is enough for me. Im not much of a nigh life person but I love a good concert here and then The masquerade lets you see so many different types of musicians while being pretty affordable. I live to think of myself as an active type person so hiking Stone Mountain would be on the list as well. I don’t know if this counts but up in Blue Ridge, Georgia there is a Big Foot museum and I am not sorry to say that that would also be on the list! And then to end it all I would probably take them to Laseters in Vinings. Its been mine and my husbands bar for so long that even though it is a little hole in the wall its the best place to sit down, have a bite and just vibe.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few I can think of off the top of my head. First and foremost my husband. He has been with me since I got my first agent and through all the yes’s and no’s, the good and bad days. He has been my rock and always encourages me to keep going after what I love. My family back home in michigan is a close second. They always encouraged me to go after my dream and keep pushing myself. Lastly, Drama Inc. here in Atlanta has been such a community to me. They were the first acting studio that I felt saw me for me and not just a number. I booked my first acting job after taking classes with them and I fully believe that they gave me the confidence I needed to go in and trust myself.
