We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan McClary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Atlanta, however, we moved to Colorado when I was just a few months old. I lived there till I was 17. At that age is when my mom and I moved back to Atlanta due to unfortunate financial distress causing us to lose our home.
I grew up in a fun, rambunctious family. We were big on holidays, celebrations, cookouts, reunions. Family was everything. I was always a highly active kid with a lot of friends and an imagination as vibrant as a phoenix. This imaginative, creative part of me has carried well into my adulthood. When I was nine, however, I experienced multiple traumatic events that ultimately led to me experiencing weight gain. This had a domino effect into being bullied, experiencing depression, insecurity, you name it. As I continued to grow up, I began finding more of my passions were found in the place of writing, music and making people laugh. I was convinced I would grow up to be a journalist or an SNL cast member. These experiences still impact me today because though I’ve of course grown and matured, I am still the person with the loudest laugh in the room and quick to show up for those that I love.
My upbringing made me a woman that desires to see real, lasting change happen in the world. Since I am familiar with the pain of trauma and the lasting effects it has on the body, mind and spirit, I have become passionate about being catalyst, voice and friend to those who’ve experienced similar things. This is why I began the brave journey of healing. This has looked like facing trauma, learning how to exercise / eat appropriately, learning the rhythms of grace for myself and so much more. I’m certain this will be a continual process for as long as I live.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a business called Megan It Healthy LLC, brilliantly inspired from my catch phrase “Megan it Happen!” 😉 A passion for wholistic health was birthed in me when I saw the power of healing in my own story. A few years ago, I confronted the trauma attached to my relationship with my health and it was then that I began to become healthier. I lost weight, gained muscle, grew in mental fortitude, learned the power of discipline and so much more.
Megan It Healthy exists to help people heal their relationship with health. The body is proven to physically store trauma on a cellular level. This means that whether we’re aware of it or not, our relationship with our body stems from our life experiences. We live in a time and culture that puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of self-care, but little that highlights the importance of healing from the things that effect us negatively to begin with. Insecurity, depression and anxiety are at an all time high. It doesn’t help when we’re constantly bombarded by a world that is picture perfect online, but no where near what they portray themselves as offline.
I believe Megan It Healthy is set apart in the way I am passionate about seeing our minds rewired back to right thinking. As we equip ourselves with practical tools for healing, we’ll become more confident in the God-given bodies we reside in, which will then influence every other area of our lives. When we’re walking in wholeness, healing and confidence, we are more effective in the work we’re created to do here on earth.
Entrepreneurship is so hard. Anyone who pursues it will be able to vouch for that as being true. I have had to sacrifice sleep, finances, and stability, just to name a few. You often battle feeling misunderstood, unsupported or just downright ready to give up. I’ve had to learn that continuing to show up for yourself and the vision you carry is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. It’s a decision that has the ability to change the world.
I want the world to know that “Megan it Healthy” in your story is possible. I have seen it happen in my own story as well as others. It is a journey that requires commitment, tenacity and discipline, but it is fully possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So many great spots in the ATL! The rooftop at Ponce City Market is a place you can’t go wrong with hanging out at.
I would for sure bring them down to Georgia’s “Mini Grand Canyon” – Providence Canyon State Park. It’s a beautiful hike and you’ll feel transported to Arizona immediately.
Chattahoochee Coffee Co on the river is a relaxing spot to hang and drink great coffee.
Basically any mom & pop taco shop is a place I’m sure to bring friends to!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are countless people who deserve kudos in my story. I’ve had incredible mentors, friends and family that have supported me in a million ways.
However, the person that comes to mind that I feel deserves a shoutout is Kris Gamble. Right out of high school, I got involved with a non-profit organization that ended up being a place I truly thrived. It was here that I learned leadership, administrative and relational skills that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Kris was the director of the organization at the time. He was someone who saw potential in me and took time to nurture those gifts. He’s still a brother and friend to this day.
Also, I wouldn’t feel right doing an amazing interview like this without shouting out my best friend and favorite person in Heaven- my mama. She’s goofy, hilarious, gentle and abounding in love. I love and miss her deeply.
