We had the good fortune of connecting with Meg Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked in Medical Administration for nearly 25 years in many different positions, managing being the main role. I also taught Group Fitness, specializing in Dance, on the side for many years. This was my release from working a stressful 9-5 job. One day my son came to me, who, at the time, was a Life/Health Coach and let me know that he started an LLC called The Cultivation Station. I was very proud of him and admired that he did this at such a young age. About a year later we talked again and came up with the idea of adding Group Fitness to the LLC. He added me as his partner shortly after and together we have opened up a Fitness studio in Carrollton Georgia where we also provide one on one Coaching services for Life, Health, Nutrition and Fitness. My thought process, as it has been for many years, is to find a way to help people in a healthy way and still have my own healthy quality of life, doing what I love to do.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am co-owner of The Cultivation Station, LLC. We offer many different Group Fitness classes such as Pilates, Yoga, Core, Dance and Interval training. We also offer coaching services for life, health, nutrition and fitness. What sets us apart from other fitness studios or gyms is that we are able to offer a more intimate, one on one style of fitness and coaching. It is important to us as instructors to help our clients achieve their personal, health and fitness goals.
I have managed medical practices for nearly 25 years and have gained a good knowledge of what it takes to run a business, as well as experience with Human Resources, Accounts Payable/Receivable and payroll. I am able to use all of this experience to help in running our business now.
The lessons I have learned along my journey: 1. Keep moving. 2. What others think of me is none of my business. 3.Put yourself first because if you don’t you can never truly help others. 4. Selfcare is everything. 5. A great leader doesn’t have to be in control of it all, a great leader allows the team they lead to help lead and become leaders as well.
Our brand is to work one on one with anyone ready to make a commitment to live a more healthy lifestyle.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Although I don’t get to the city as much as I used to when I was younger I still love visiting. Our city has so much to offer in terms of entertainment and great places to eat. I think the best thing to do for someone traveling to Atlanta is to get a “City Pass” which allows you to visit the top attractions. I would love to do this again as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to credit Al-anon. Al-anon is a support group for anyone who is dealing with addiction with a family member(s) or friend(s). This support group helped me learn how to put the focus on me and not everyone else. Which in turn taught me how to set boundaries and find ways to help others in a more healthy way.
