We had the good fortune of connecting with Meek Pearson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meek, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m originally from Washington DC. Mumbo Sauce is an all purpose sauce found in the DC area. I decided to make my own and started selling it. From there, once folks started trying my sauce, it was the pandemic, we were lock down, and I then started selling plates and giving samples of Mumbo Sauce. By the end summer of 2020,, Meeks Mumbo was born and then my catering company, MM Catered Cuisine LLC was formed the year after.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My entire career is customer service and customer relations. I formed MM Catered Cuisine and Meeks Mumbo off the strength of my customer service experience and the connection I have with others, regardless of where they’re from. I am still overcoming challenges as I answer this question. The food business is finicky, it’s seasonal and it’s a business that’s all over the Atlanta area. There’s a lot of competition and we’re also going through inflation, so food is EXPENSIVE. I’ve learned that you have to stay consistent even when folks aren’t ordering, when folks aren’t looking for a caterer and when folks don’t wanna buy sauce. I want everyone to know that Meeks Mumbo Sauce WILL be in store shelves by the end of this year and to look out for that. And I will grow to become one of the top private chefs and caterers in the Atlanta area. Just check for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmm. There’s so many options. I have a lot of vegan friends so I’d definitely start with Slutty Vegan for food. If they want some good protein, id recommend STK or New York Prime. I’d let them know to check out the Atl Aquarium, it’s the most beautiful in the USA, there’s also the black owner CloverLand Ranch in Atlanta, where you can ride horses or atvs. They can paint and sip at Dine and Design which has a 90’s theme sip and paint, There’s also the Trap Museum in Atlanta and so many other options that I can’t fit in this response.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband and Damyon deserves some recognition when it comes to getting my business started. During the pandemic lock down period, he urged me to get my sauce out there and to start selling plates. Because of him, I enrolled in culinary school and formed two businesses. One for my sauce and the other for catering. I’ve always cooked for others and didn’t realize it was what I was meant to be doing until that conversation with him. He’s always believed in me even when it wasn’t something I was quite ready to do.
