We had the good fortune of connecting with Maythavee Tjhang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maythavee, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I’ve always been raised to be an overachiever in everything I get into. I’m not sure if it’s just my Asian American upbringing or my parents general expectations but I don’t give up easily. A good reference on whether to keep going or to give up is how much are you’re willing to sacrifice. Your health, social life, mental health, and life goals are all interconnected and affect each other. If you’re willing to give up your free time for a potential career opportunity, then that’s a good indication on whether to keep going. It’s not easy. I still have a hard time balancing out work and my life goals, but it’s always good to remember that you’re not a loser for giving up for something you regard as important.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a filmmaker in Atlanta, it’s hard to differentiate among the crowd of Marvel makers and big wig productions. I wouldn’t consider myself on their level yet, however, I see in the near future to join in the ranks. I am extremely excited for my upcoming film, Dragon City, to be release later next year and another production named, Wokman. Both films are targeting the real Asian American experience and combating the conversation of racism. I was able to support these films through a network of passionate independent filmmakers. At first, it was not easy to break into the independent film scene, however, I was able to connect with many upcoming artists. One lesson I learned is to be open to any opportunities and be fearless. Sometimes one text message is all you need to kickstart a long lasting friendship and connection.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best itinerary for Atlanta is exploring the different cultures and food that the city has to offer. I truly adore Atlanta for its diversity. Most places I would recommend would be Duluth area with Korean food and the Jeju Spa; Buford Hwy and the Chinatown Food Hall; and Indian cuisines next to Brookhaven. There are international food markets, the Dragon Boat Festival, and cultural festival every weekend.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My film team, Howling Warlocks Productions, deserves the most recognition for my success. They are my friends and my second family now. Without the Howling Warlocks Productions, I wouldn’t be as confident in my work as I did before. We help each other out and make sure we continue to grow together as a team and individually.
