We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maya, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The work that comes behind being a business owner. From the moment a client walks into my salon I make them feel at home. I make them feel like there is nothing they cannot accomplish once inside my doors. We talk, give good advice, I let them cry, we laugh, I make them beautiful, and then they leave. Until the next appointment. It’s truly a full service salon
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a Master cosmetologist is indeed art. I have blank many clients that I consider a blank canvas to create a masterpiece on. This is not an easy task. Many years of training and just doing the work has made me who I am today. I’ve learned you never stop learning in this field. You never “arrive”. As soon as you think you have all the answers, a client will sit in your chair and cause you to go right back to the drawing board. I love every moment of it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have many friends that come from LA or Florida to visit. Planning is where I come in at. Its always about the best hangout spots with the best food/drinks. We start with my favorite breakfast spots like Flying biscuit, or Another broken egg in midtown, lunch time always include some type of Happy hour spot at Sivas tavern or Three dollar Cafe where we can watch some sports also. Dinner is my favorite time where we get dressed, makeup/hair and hit the town. Spots like Black out atlanta, Dugan, Lanethia lounge, ATL live, or other lounge/clubs is a must.
The Underground Atlanta is always a great place to walk downtown to shop and to see the city.
Sometimes we check out the Atlanta Aquarium or try a sip and paint event.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband hands down deserves all the credit. The support he’s given me from the beginning is nothing short of amazing. He allowed me to quit my full time corporate job and start my own vision. He believed in me more than I did. He supported me financially, physically, and mentally. This process couldn’t of happened without him.
