We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Ladson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Being a young black woman and starting her own business is a blessing! My thought process behind starting my own business was having generational wealth for my future family. Having multiple streams of income and being my own boss is very important to me.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is MayaReneeBeauty. My business is a serviced based business offering makeup and hair services. My business is run by me and only me. What sets me apart from other Makeup Artists is that I am self-taught with many creative skills. Through hands on training, I learned the best applications for all skin tones, skin types, and best forms of makeup (soft or matter finish) for the client. I am blessed with artistic abilities and can draw images on my face. The use of color tones give me the ability to understand what colors and shades are best for my client. I am a licensed cosmetologist which is unique for my profession and not common in Atlanta.
My success is attributed to being focused and keeping my mind on the end goal. The end goal is to have generational wealth, multiple streams of income, a happy & healthy life. So far, the only thing that has been difficult is not getting discouraged or allowing others to distract me from my goals. One of the most important things I learned along the way is having God in your life and true supportive friends in your circle is very important. Friends can be easy to find but keeping them around is hard. My circle is very small and I like that because along the way not many showed support or care for what I had going on. Another important thing I learned was educating yourself is important and the key to starting and maintaining a business.Getting the proper education and licensing in your career field will always get your further ahead.
I want the world to know that I am a driven, young, smart, professional, humble, and talented makeup artist and entrepreneur. I want my name to stretch far over the beauty industry and all across the globe. Without God and a true supportive circle I would not be where I am today.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best-friend lives in Atlanta, but if she were to be from out of town I would definitely take her to Drawbar! Drawbar has great food and a great view of the city! Some other nice spots to eat at would be FirstWatch, Another Broken Egg, Bar Taco, Whataburger, Flower Child, Blue India, Velvet Taco, and Houstons. I enjoy shopping at Atlantic Station and Perimeter Mall.
This year I want to travel more, so Jamaica is a place I need to see!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give credit to my mother who God blessed me with. I am very thankful for her. She helped jump start my business and has supported me through all my decisions.
