We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Head and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance is extremely important to me. In the past few years, I’ve learned the value of balancing home and work. Early in my career I really didn’t consider writing music for film and television work. Writing music has always been an outlet of creativity and a fun hobby. Making music was my life and with that other aspects fo my life suffered.. As my career evolved, I began to understand prioritizing my time with music helped my creativity. Spending time with my family and friends helped me reset mentally and spiritually.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a film composer and music producer from Marietta, Georgia. I began playing music at the age of five and writing and creating my own music at the age of 12. My mother had a heavy influence on me with music. During my childhood, our home will be filled with music such as jazz, gospel, classical, and array of instrumentals that I would play and mimic. Through the years, I began to create and experiment with my own instrumentals and tracks.

I attended Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia and would continue the hobby of creating music in my dorm room which leads me to a local hip hop artist in the Savannah area. Through that artists, I began making music for other artists which lead me to record and produce music. With that I began to pursue my dream of being a music producer.

I moved home and began working with local artists in the Atlanta area in a small studio.. Through that studio, I was introduced to a local film production company that needed music for their film. I had no idea how to score a film but took a shot at it and the film and music received rave reviews. With that success, I started to educate myself on film composition and I haven’t looked back since.

Through years of composing music for independent films and commercials, I received several opportunities to compose the music for successful television series, films and documentaries. Some of those projects at Starz hit series P-Valley, CW’s Tom Swift, PBS’s documentary, The Black Church; This Is Our Story, This Is oUr Song, and HBO Max documentary, Frederick Douglass; In Five Speeches.

Along the way, I received a few awards and accolades that I am very proud of. I’ve made some life-changing friendships and I am extremely excited about the future.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have an amazing support system from family. My wife, Etasha has definitely been in my corner since day one. We’ve been together for 18 years and married for 16 years. She has been my backbone and biggest supporter throughout my career. My mother and father have pushed me to follow my dreams and talents, They introduced me to music and without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My big brother who continues to encourage and protect me, he gives me courage to continue to push through… I am grateful for them….
