We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Reiter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, how do you think about risk?
I’m pretty trigger-happy when it comes to new ideas and projects. I’ve started freelance projects, a clothing brand, my own business; I’m certainly not risk-averse.
Taking these chances has created many opportunities and just as many setbacks. I don’t think I could have made it 5 years into my photography career without saying yes to the crazy jobs, to traveling for work, or pitching zany ideas to potential clients. You have to take chances on things, otherwise you’ll never move forward.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my approach to photography is really weird to some others in my field. I’ve got a knack for being in the right place at the right time – maybe it’s just my luck but I’ve been able to capture energetic, emotional moments in pretty much any environment. My photos and videos evoke excitement and energy, and I’m pretty proud of my ability to tell stories in a unique way.
It didn’t come naturally, but has instead been a process of practice and determination. Taking photos as a discipline rather than waiting for inspiration to strike has been integral in my progress, both as an artist and a business owner.
I’ve learned a lot about myself from my time with a camera – it has enabled me to speak with my own voice through visual media, and I often find myself going over old photos to see how my perspective has changed over the years.
I want my photos to be unique, novel, and magnetic. I want people to see my work and think – “Damn. That’s crazy! How the hell did he get that?”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Chattanooga. There’s great coffee (shoutout to Goodman), breweries everywhere, and the food scene is really growing. I’m not much of an outdoors person, but can be convinced to go on a hike occasionally, and our city is great for that.
A few examples of local businesses I frequent –
1) Goodman Coffee. Ian Goodman and Tyler Sowie are master roasters and I’ve had the best coffee I’ve ever had at these shops.
2) Hutton and Smith. Tasty beers and great environment.
3) Neidlov’s. Incredible bakery with all the best stuff.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shoutout is dedicated to my wife, Charlotte. You’re a constant inspiration and I love you so much.
