We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Q. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I felt like I was here for a bigger purpose & there was something about music and art that made me realize that it’s okay to go against the grain and tell your own story. This world is so big and the only thing that brings us all together is art. Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves, and for myself one day I would like to be a beacon for the unspoken. Representation is also very important for me and I know there are others out there like me. I believe that it was not a choice I made to pursue this creative path, but more like a story that has already been written, this was meant for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write and produce music as a recording artist. I also have my own production company where I get to serve my clients and their vision. This includes music & video production, photography, live sound design and show production. I’m most proud of my proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Rahway recognizing my work in Production. I’ve also won a few awards for Best Overall Production and Best Sound Design in a Play through working with local schools that have amazing programs. I’ve never really thought about winning awards, that comes after the work is done but when I’m in my process it just feels organic, I’m always in the zone. There will be challenges but for me I like to stay calm, things always work out when you are leveled with yourself. I want people to know that my work is inspired by an empty canvas in my mind that paints itself with every imaginable, beautiful thought.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love spending time in my studio so if my friends come over I’ll have them in my studio and show them all my new music, or any projects that I’m doing. We’d take it from the studio to the Nintendo switch and play 24 rounds of Mario Kart (It gets serious) and then once it’s time to go out we head over to Brooklyn. I love going to 3 Dollar Bill for OTA which happens every Monday night, it’s a fun event for the LGBT community to dance and compete. My friends and I get a front row seat every time, it’s always a vibe. Being in New Jersey makes it easy for me and my friends to go out into NYC and explore everything it has to offer. When we’re looking for a chill vibe, we would go to one of the many waterfronts along the Jersey Coast and have a blanket, some snacks and some music and enjoy eachothers company.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my mother for her grace and support, my sisters for humbling me every time, and my father for making me the coolest son on earth. I want to thank Diva LP for always believing in me and being my mentor throughout my high school career along with Jensyn Modero, Robert Van Wyk, Allison Dooley, Joe McKie & Miguel Bolivar. I want to shout out Rahway Dance Theatre for being my creative outlet for dance and allowing me the space to create. I also want to thank EJ at Inspiration Audio for being my engineer and mentor, I’m so happy to have all of these amazing people be a part of my story!
