We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Pierce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Thick skin is important in any role… but especially as an entrepreneur. Being told “no” is a daily (sometimes multiple times daily) occurrence, so you must get used to rejection.

I’ve found that adopting a mindset that looks at every “no” as an opportunity to learn, grow, and evolve is the best way to approach rejection. Don’t get me wrong, no one likes to lose, but when you can glean learnings from your losses and adjust appropriately, eventually those “no’s” become a “yes.”

What should our readers know about your business?
Immediate is a financial wellness company that offers a voluntary financial wellness benefit named ImmediatePay. Through the ImmediatePay app, employees can responsibly access their pay on-demand in the event of unexpected expenses arising in-between paydays.

As an entrepreneur, it’s so exciting to see something that started as an idea scratched out on a piece of paper turn into a team of people working tirelessly to execute on our mission, so I’m most proud of the team we’ve built at Immediate who are aligned on our company mission to positively impact the financial wellbeing of 1 million American workers by 2025. This team of nearly 50 people wake up every day focused on moving us one step closer and operate with integrity and tenacity.

One of the most challenging parts of scaling a business rapidly – especially with the economic environment we’ve been operating in the last 3 years – is to maintain a strong culture and a bought-in team. It takes dedicated focus, continual pulse checks, and A LOT of candid conversations. Your culture can define your business and dramatically impact your success (or downfall), so it is a challenge we continually evaluate, adjust, and pursue.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having lived in Atlanta for a decade before relocating to Birmingham a few years back, I’m partial to the Canton Street area of Roswell. My wife and I regularly walked to a few of our favorite restaurants, but our go-to spot was Osteria Mattone. Not 100% sure they’re still on the menu, but the risotto balls appetizer is one of my favorite starters ever!

I’ll also give a shout-out to one of our customers in Atlanta, gusto!, which is one of my favorite spots to grab a quick, healthy lunch anytime I’m in town. Their food is fresh, the service is always stellar, and they have locations across the entire metro.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve felt support from so many people and organizations along the way that it would be hard to narrow down to just a few. In general, the startup ecosystems of both Birmingham and Atlanta have impacted me personally and the overall growth of Immediate. Launching a startup can be extremely lonely, so finding a support system of people who have been in your shoes is a key element to mental health along the way… both ecosystems have been super supportive on our journey!
