We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Guy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I don’t mind taking risks. I think a large part of growth is being uncomfortable. In comedy I think audacity is necessary, and if you can match that with courage and some confidence, you whittle a joke down to how you really feel about something. There is a line, that sometimes must be crossed.
Both in joke writing and the business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m not entirely sure what sets me apart from everyone, but I think that’s something comedians find out on stage. Every joke, good and bad, has whittled me down to what’s most unique about me:
It’s that I’m me. I lived my life. This is my perspective. These are my stories.
Being a comedian isn’t easy, and it’s difficult not to tie your success to your own feelings of self worth. We get direct feedback of our art, immediately.
The biggest challenge for me is having the courage to try something different, even when what I have is already working.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was on a week long trip with my friend, it’s because I’m dead and he’s transporting my body.

I like my friends. But I like alone time, too.

I would say get a hotel.

Then I’d tell him to visit the Laughing Skull Lounge, the Punchline, and the World of Coca Cola.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to the entire Atlanta Standup Comedy Scene. Everyone I’ve met has either become a friend or taught me a lesson. It’s a close knit community that is good about lifting one another up. I wouldn’t be the comedian I am now without the advice, mentorship, and friendship of so many people I know.
