We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Greenia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
DIY. I struggled with DIY music for 20 years, but didn’t make true progress until I assembled a large team and started delegating

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I come from an eccentric, creative family in Detroit. I became a hired gun session player and moved to Atlanta

I’d always written my own material, and have fronted many bands, but very few of my originals had been recorded. As a result, I was backed up with 25 years of songs and little to show for it

I had a breakthrough when I started codifying my music in MIDI and called the project MIDIITIS. It helped me get over my punk rock limitations

I took the MIDIITIS versions of my songs into Diamond Street, and hired the Group Hugs Wrecking Crew to play over them. I recorded and mixed it all myself. Spencer Garn mastered 3 albums and I mastered the other 9

We started the Group Hugs Podcast to find out more about my musicians, but then we played Kevin Bacon Game with the results and now it’s exploding

In order to pay for all this, I took on many clients and completed their albums, too. They’ve all been coming out recently, with more on the way

With the help of my coaches and managers, I have been pitching my vast catalog for publishing and licensing deals, while distributing the songs online and getting good responses to them

Now I am focused on getting more results for my music, and offering production consulting to other artists that are in the same boat I was a few years ago

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
7 Stages Theatre, Taco Supremo, Plaza Theater, Thai Chili, Mary’s, Binder’s Art Supply, Atlanta Zoo, Relapse Comedy, High Museum, Atlanta Aquarium

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Spencer Garn, the owner of Diamond Street Studios, for taking me on as a business partner and having faith in my work and the work of my clients

My many clients, for trusting me with something as personal as their music

The Group Hugs Wrecking Crew, my personal army of musicians, for going out on a limb, playing my music, and appearing on my podcast Group Hugs where Alex Teich interviews them about their musical backgrounds

My music manager Rick Barker and my entrepreneurial coach Sam Ovens, for helping me break out of long held patterns of existence

And of course, the fans, the people who love my songs and participate in this media empire we’re building. Everything we do is ultimately for them
