We had the good fortune of connecting with Mathan Cephas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mathan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Through my experience in life, I have learned RISKS and moving out of my comfort zone into the unknown is a huge part of achieving greatness. I’m all about taking chances and calculated risks. A favorite quote of mine from George Lucas reminds me to “Always remember our focus determines our reality.” In life if you want to succeed, we must pursue it fully with unfettered determination. My career path has shown me that the world is incredibly competitive and our choices can come with an incredible amount of risks. Thomas Jefferson taught us a phrase that still rings true today, “With great risk comes great reward.” I encourage you, as readers, to give it your all. Ambitiously, take those leaps of faith, leave your fear of ‘Risks’ behind.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others. Am I set apart, different, or unique? That’s hard to say because I’m just like you. I am a son, a brother, a friend, I am your family but what sets me apart is the fact that most people learned fear. Fear limits us and immobilizes us for going after what we want in life. Fear tells us we are not smart enough, cute enough, strong enough or that we will fail. Fear makes most scared to take the next step. I just learned to look at fear differently as a friend to guide me. I get afraid but fear should never stop me from going after what I want. Fear may help to shape my decision not to be careless but guide me in the best choices for my life. I guess my superpower is being fearless. I am most excited about my journey but I am only getting started. Each step I take, I am learning more and more about me. I’ve learned to love and accept me for who I am and to be okay with that. I don’t have to be better than anyone else rather be my best me. As I advance my career, I can still encourage you to go after your dreams and do well in life. For me, I am developing my brand “Mathan’ it means a gift from God.” My parents saw me as this and named me accordingly, but now I see my life has purpose and meaning. I hope my life, my brand, and my story encourages you to be your best you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Concerts I’d get us tickets to see Drake, Kanye West, Playboi Carti, and Frank Ocean. Snorkeling or diving at the beach but if they are afraid of that kind of stuff, then surfing 🏄‍♂️, deep sea fishing at Catalina island, people watching at Venice Beach, or the fair at Santa Monica Pier. Go shopping in the garment district. Go to the Staples Center the house the Kobe built. Watch a movie at Mann’s Chinese theater. Put our hands in the hands of legends like Michael Jackson, Prince, Denzel on the Hollywood Boulevard. Hike to the Hollywood Sign. Enjoy the amusement of Hollywood Studios, Disneyland, Knottsberry Farms, or Lego land. Go camping at San Diego Beach. Get spooked out by the haunted Queen Mary. Choose a dish from a diverse list of cultural foods like …….Brazilian restaurant, Happy Family Vegetarian restaurant, soul food of Roscoe’s Chicken and waffles. Take a quick trip to Vegas (but what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas)! Go skiing in 70 degrees weather. Hit a concert in Coachella or the Hollywood Bowl. Meet some of the best people on earth by just walking around Pasadena. As I think about it, coming for a week is only teasing yourself.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, I’d like to specifically shoutout 3 people. I grew up watching my mother face and conquer trial after tribulation. As the eldest in my family I was able to perceive my mother in ways that inspired me to have courage and carry myself with confidence, in this world. She taught me how to live and be as a Brazilian-American. My father on the other hand taught me how to persevere with strength and wit along my journey. Most importantly he taught me how to be responsible and smart as a Black man. They both played an immense parts in guiding me and molding me into the man I am today. Last but not least, I’d like to shout-out my little sister who always has my back and is important part of my team backing me as I strive to be the greatest I can be..
