We had the good fortune of connecting with Mason McClintock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mason, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“Do what makes you happy and nothing else!”

On one hand, I wholeheartedly agree with this piece of advice, and it has inspired a lot of my decisions over the years. I have always tried to pursue my peace and my passions ferociously. It inspires me never to give up on myself and to listen to my heart, despite ever getting discouraged by conventionality.

On the other hand, however, I feel like this advice can sound like an excuse not to do difficult things. I’m learning more and more each day that I can’t give up what I want most for what I want right now if I want to be truly happy. Key word: learning. It is a work in progress because being so real, sometimes the journey toward our true fulfillment is not cute, fun, or happy. Overcoming barriers that lie between us and the things that make us the happiest is not easy, but it’s necessary most of the time. I’ve found that falling in love with the grind of being a working musician, artist, creator, and entrepreneur and all the challenges that accompany it is the best way to align myself and my happiness with some of the less “fun” parts of the job.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a recording artist, I sing soul-pop music right now. I write a whole lot more than that, but the music I’m focused on making in the near future is pop influenced by my favorite steak-and-potatoes artists and sounds and voices; and by that I mean to just emphasize the soul in soul-pop. I love pop music with vocals that take me to church, so that’s kind of what I do. I love electronic and dance music, too, so that inspires my art as well.

I’ve been playing music slowly but surely over the last four years I spent in college, but I just graduated from the University of Georgia, and I’m so excited to be moving to Nashville, Tennessee, in the fall pursue my music full time, and I CAN’T WAIT! I feel like a baby bird about to jump out of my next for the first time. This is it. I am excited to really give myself the space to fully dive into my career as a musician and performer head first.

I’ve always been a huge over-thinker; I literally can’t even go to Dairy Queen without second guessing my order. True story (ask any of my friends). So I’m currently trying to operate with the mantra, “don’t think, just do,” because of the analysis paralysis I experience sometimes. I am learning that the “perfect time” to thrive or make moves doesn’t exist. I just have to believe in myself and work to be sure that I am as prepared as I can be to attack the day and let fate handle the rest.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love nature and all things marine, so I of course would have to make a stop by the Georgia Aquarium to see the fishies. While we’re there, we’d have to visit the World of Coke, too. Some thrift shopping in Little Five Points and an Ikea lunch trip would definitely be on the list as well. I love shopping around Ponce City Market and the Avalon, so we would totally go grab lunch and some drinks there, too!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I joined 4-H in the fourth grade in Bacon County, Georgia, and my life changed forever. 4-H, the largest youth development organization in the world, was and still is one of the most pivotally impactful forces on my life. I learned such important life and leadership skills like communication, empathy, and awareness alongside folks who have become lifelong friends in 4-H, and I got my start as a performer as a member of Georgia 4-H’s Clovers & Company, a nationally renowned performing arts group. Above all else, 4-H was among the first places I ever felt like I really belonged. I was encouraged to be authentically myself, pursue my goals, and transform my dreams into reality in 4-H, and I am honored to give back to this transformational organization and the world’s youth, as I am currently being inducted onto the Young Alumni Advisory Committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees.
