We had the good fortune of connecting with Mason “MASY.” Calhoun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mason “MASY.”, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
A life of love, I feel, is a life of risk – to take a walk on a tightrope not knowing if the safety net is below.

That’s how it felt making the decision to leave school to devote my time to artistry. Surely not the safe route, but when is love ever “safe” ?
Love is vulnerability. It is opening the self to be explored and stretched all in the intent to receive the same love back.

I’ve found immeasurable value in this kind of risk. If it were not for my decision to walk this path, I would not have had the amount of personal growth that I have seen in myself over the past 2 years.
They say no risk, no reward. In this case, this risk of passion has gifted to me a depth in awareness of self that I would not have otherwise and I believe it reflects in the music.

If not for the risk of loving, one would not know the reward of invaluable joy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music is a universally powerful tool. For me, at a mainstream level, I felt music is missing some soul. A good amount of what is shared is pumped from labels that have more interest in exploiting the consumer than caring for or healing the consumer – it’s a business.

My motive as an artist is simply to show that there is never a shortage of creators that genuinely care about making a difference that’s beyond a 30 second clip.
That there is so much territory to be explored within this medium of music. This world is simply a range of frequency and sound. I aim to be a member of the frequency that uplifts and influences positive construction.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Maaaan, ATL has got EVERYTHING! It’s to boil it all down to a short itinerary, but I will do my best!

We hittin’ American Deli first for some wings no doubt. In my head, this is a Wednesday night so we gonna go to
Peters Street Station for some live music and art. That place is vibe central.

The city’s got some beautiful parks and nature trails so we’d go to one of those at some point for sure during the week.

Hit Cascade, obviously.

And much like this city itself, most of what we do would be completely spontaneous and out of the ordinary but spectacular and worth remembering forever.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My love of songwriting stems from a love of poetry, and this love had been nurtured at an early age thanks to an artist, a griot, a language scholar, and my middle school English/Arts teacher Mrs. Susan Arauz Barnes.

She teaches at the Ron Clark Academy and is currently in the works of producing a showcase of poetic and musical talent in the city.

Her Instagram is @arauzed.

Definitely a story to share there.
