We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Eva Esposito and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary Eva, how does your business help the community?
Purple Pear, my crochet business, plays a significant role in creating a positive social impact within the community and beyond. With six years of experience in crochet, I have leveraged my platform to advocate for social change and raise awareness on various important issues.

As an activist, I use my voice and platform to shed light on women’s rights, LGBT rights, eating disorder awareness, and the significance of art therapy for neurodivergent individuals. I openly share my personal journey of using crochet and knitting as a form of therapy during my eating disorder recovery, which resonated with millions of people worldwide. The viral nature of my story has allowed me to connect with and support hundreds of individuals who have reached out to express their gratitude and share their own experiences.

Through my viral videos of knitting in class, I have inadvertently created a safe and accepting space for hundreds of people who feel more comfortable engaging in stimming activities while in an educational setting. By normalizing stimming and promoting self-expression, I strive to create an environment that celebrates individuality and diversity.

Additionally, I serve as a role model for aspiring craft business owners, inspiring them to start and grow their own creative endeavors. By sharing my experiences, knowledge, and challenges in building Purple Pear, I encourage others to pursue their passions and explore the possibilities of turning their crafts into successful businesses.

Overall, Purple Pear goes beyond crochet. It serves as a platform for activism, empowerment, and social change. By addressing important social issues, sharing personal stories, and providing support and inspiration, I aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and the community at large.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is more than just crochet; it’s a testament to my journey of self-discovery and healing. As I reflect on my professional growth, I am reminded of the transformative power of crochet and knitting during my eating disorder recovery.

During that challenging period, I turned to knitting as a form of art therapy and found solace in the rhythmic movement of the needles. It became a lifeline, a way for me to channel my emotions and regain control. Through this process, I discovered not only the healing nature of creativity but also the resilience that lies within me.

However, my journey was not without its hurdles. While knitting in class, I faced cyberbullying and judgment from those who couldn’t understand the significance of this craft in my recovery. But I refused to let negativity dim my light. Instead, I embraced my true self, knitting proudly and unapologetically. I turned those moments of adversity into fuel for my passion, using them as stepping stones to inspire others and break down societal norms.

What sets me apart in my artistry is not only my technical skill and attention to detail but also the powerful narrative woven into each stitch. Through my creations, I strive to share my personal story of resilience, mental health awareness, and body acceptance. It’s about more than just beautiful pieces; it’s about advocating for change and challenging societal stigmas.

My brand, Purple Pear, is a beacon of hope and a reminder that art can be a transformative force. I want the world to know that my journey, intertwined with my art, has been marked by both vulnerability and strength. It’s a testament to the power of embracing our true selves and using creativity as a tool for healing and making a difference.

I stand as a symbol of resilience, not only for those who have faced similar challenges but for anyone seeking inspiration to pursue their passions and embrace their unique identity. Together, we can break down barriers, promote self-acceptance, and create a more compassionate and inclusive world through the art that speaks to our souls.
