We had the good fortune of connecting with Marshawn Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marshawn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was very simple, I had a natural eye for cinema and I’ve always wanted to create things. I use to think that starting your own business was only something rich people do. But any goal is reachable as long as you’re willing to do the work. I believe that every has an eye for something. So why not perfect it and make your own empire.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a photographer/videographer has brought me along way in life. I was able to meet many people state to state doing what I love. I started from purchasing my first camera from Best Buy for $500. During that time it was a huge sacrifice because i really didn’t have the money to spend like that. But i knew this investment was going to pay off. I never went to school or took any classes to learn my craft. No mentors or tutors to guide. Everything i learn was either through YouTube or my own experiences. Everyday I’m always feeding my business. Rather it be researching the latest cameras or simply doing a photoshoot or music video. I’ve made many mistakes, from forgetting lenses and other equipment to not speaking up when i feel something could be better while shooting. It’s a never ending learning process quite frankly. I’m proud to say that i started from scratch, but i won’t end where i started. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many local talents as well shooting for a couple of big names. Every experience is a humbling one and I’m never too good not to grow.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If it was a Sunday i would take them to the bears games at the iconic soldier field for Sunday night football. On Monday we would stay downtown and hit up navy pier. Tuesday i would them to a nice taco Tuesday place like federales right off of lake street. Wednesday i would take them to a dope comedy show at bar 10 hosted by lien Rogers. Thursday we would hit up a baseball game at either the white Sox stadium or Wrigleyville. Friday is definitely a bulls game at the United center. Saturday we rocking out at a dope club prolly in the south suburbs (where I’m from)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my good friend Johnny Pittman aka JPizzle. He was the person who introduced me to Dgainz (a Chicago videographer) who opened my eyes to the whole videography business.
