Meet Marsha Archer: Public Relations Expert

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marsha Archer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marsha, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work-life balance is the most overused phrase, and for many, the most unachievable task. Everyone says it with the best of intentions, but more often than not, duty calls. For me, after being physically and mentally drained after the first five years as an entrepreneur (yes, time slips away as you focus on growing your business), I finally threw in the towel and learned to schedule my ‘me time’ and ‘family time’ like I schedule anything else. Since 2013, my one promise is that I would 1. book travel and slip away for at least three days per qtr. 2. book international travel at least twice per year while checking something off of my bucket list. 3. never move or cancel those plans and while away, never overbook or overcommit myself so that vacation feels like work. And finally, 4. Use my laptop or phone once per day to check something work related for no more than 30 minutes.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At M-Squared Public Relations, we specialize in making news across the hotel, restaurant, tourism and other hospitality-related industries. To make that happen, we have an energetic team across two offices–Atlanta and Charlotte–where we take a small idea and make it big. We take a big idea and make it huge. What makes us better, different, likable and keepable is the relationship, creativity and rapport we bring to every client interaction. During the pandemic we shifted and began working with some new industries we never would have considered. Shockingly, we fell head over heels for those clients and I can comfortably say that they feel the same way about M-Squared. Ultimately, it was proof that motivation sometimes comes from the ability to learn and be challenged. As a result, the focus areas of the agency have expanded. And that’s a good thing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Atlanta and anyone who visits me is always convinced to move here. I know, I know, we’re full….but the apartment buildings going up across the city say we’re making room for more people, so I’d prefer those newbies be my own friends. Ha! But for starters, I would definitely take a stroll along the Beltline to show off Atlanta’s diversity. Afternoon drinks and light bites at Estrella Rooftop followed by tours of some of Atlanta’s Black landmarks like The King Center, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and Hammonds House Museum. As a collector of Black art, I would definitely add September Gray Art Gallery and ZuCot Gallery to our evening stop after dinner at Apt. 4B where rockstar and female Executive Chef Dayana Joseph serves up dishes that makes you feel like Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms just gave you the keys to the city. A seat at By George at The Candler Hotel would definitely make its way onto the itinerary. Justin, the bartender, makes the meanest smoked Old Fashioned and his gregarious conversation keeps you at the bar wanting more cocktails–and more of him.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow! I have so many people to thank for my success. My biggest fan is absolutely my husband who is also an entrepreneur. Every time we travel, we talk about how to be bigger and better at our craft. But above all of that, he keeps me grounded and reminds me to separate my work persona from being an at-home wife, mother and friend. When working from home during quarantine, it was so easy to blur those lines. I also am thankful to my Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., an organization grounded in excellence and service to all mankind. My Sorority sisters and the programs affiliated with my chapter constantly challenge me to balance my endeavors with community service and looking backwards to pull others along for the journey, especially the youth. On the other hand, some of my drive was fostered by the words of detractors or those who weren’t so supportive. In my mind, though, I transposed their feedback to be encouraging–my determination to prove them wrong.
