We had the good fortune of connecting with Marquis Tucker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marquis, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I like to believe that taking risk is very important to the success of any entrepreneurs career. Risks, whether it’s calculated or not, can be extremely rewarding because there is only two outcomes; a win or a lesson. Either way, you can not lose. I am always taking risk, some less calculated than other, but that has been my approach to life since I was a child. There is a curtain level of thrill seeking behind the uncertainty of risk taking that I live for. Venturing into the unknown with confidence and adoptability is key. More than anything I have to believe it will work. Even when it does not seem possible, I have to have faith. But I am fully accepting of any outcome. In those situations I think of what my mom has always told me, “Pick yourself up from your boot straps and get back too it.”, and that is what keeps me motivated to try again. There is going to be loses and failures, it is almost impossible to avoid but my perspective has to see the lesson in it. I learn from those experiences even if it is just what not to do next time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I create from a place of self discovery and respect for the natural world. Most if not all of my art pieces reflect my love for nature and all of it’s wonders including outer space. Our world is full of natural wonders and nothing excites me more that recreating some of God’s most beautiful pieces of art like the cloudscapes and patterns found in nature. So I challenge myself by finding different materials to recreate those natural elements and sometimes a canvas just will not cut it. Apart of creativity is problem solving, that is the part of the challenges I face that excited me the most because there are thousands of different ways to achieve any one thing. I love that about art. I have to be flexible as well, it takes a open mind and a wide range of knowledge about material and techniques that you can pull from to achieve things. If one way doesn’t work then what else is out there or what can I do to get the results I want. I’ve built myself and my art career side by side. I choose to become a visual artist to create a legacy for me and my family and that along with the struggles I faced becoming a man has molded my career and my life. I am still growing and learning everyday and that is something that comes with this life. Learning to adapt and stay resilient has been key to my success thus far.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them out to eat at a few places, Joe & Debbs for breakfast then; SLEEK Sport Bar, Yo Mama’s, Hattie B’s, Post Office Pies, The Southern Kitchen, or Top That Grill for lunch and/or dinner. That’s just naming a few places too. After that we gotta go to a club or bar so we would go back to SLEEK or Hush Lounge, Luxe Lounge, or Euphoria for a night out. We would hit the art museum, Railroad Park, or go hiking at Ruffner Mountain to see the sights. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to give it to the people that have come into my life and poured into my cup. Women like my mom, sister, and niece are some of my biggest supporters Valynica Johnson and Nadiya Gulley are some of the other entrepreneurs that constantly advising me on different business ventures and creative ideas, creating opportunities, and simply expressing their love and respect form and my craft which keeps me motivated. I stress the importance of a strong support group and these women never fail to deliver when I need them the most.
