We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlos E’van and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marlos, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
The top 5 things that make me happy rn are ; Sunsets,Good Food,Good Times with Friends & Fam, Art, & my Polaroid Camera! I feel like all of these things are interweaved in my life and bring me Peace & Love even when the world is Chaos. My Polaroid Camera has changed my life. Its like a connection to the past but in the now; with instant results that I’m never disappointed in. The imperfections in the lighting and the polaroid pic offers perfection!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is the authenticity of who i am. My art is always evolving & invoking. The things I’ve accomplished in the last 5 years would make your head swirl but I never dwell on the wins although I appreciate them. I’m proud of the fact that a kid from small town Mississippi has their art in various places all over the world & have created an environment where I can create opportunities for other creatives to thrive. Non of this was easy, especially being a Black creative Down South, but the work is unstoppable & undeniable. I’m proud 2 be who I am. I don’t code switch when Im in a room full of “successful” people, which is an accomplishment in itself. One thing that I’ve learned along the way is to keep failing & one day, those failures will turn into wins!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmm good question. I would take them to places like graffiti spots, galleries, North Nashville, TSU & Fisk, McGruder Center, & one of my fave places ever, The Lake (secret location). As far as food, we’d probably order pick up from Southern V, Bombay Palace, King Solomons, Jamaica Way, & I would cook. Im the next Gordon Ramsey. We’d go visit my friends who are all unique/fun & if the pandemic wasn’t still around, we could have drinks at Inglewood Lounge or Dukes on the East Side. Either way, I’d make sure you had a blast! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wowow. I’m dedicating this shout-out 2 everybody who inspired me, loved me, helped me, taught me, hurt me, & guided me thru my life. There’s too many 2 name but just know I see you & I’m forever grateful.
