We had the good fortune of connecting with Markisha Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Markisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Providing hair products was a no-brainer. On social media, everyone always used to compliment my hair and ask me for tips and tricks. I would literally give them a whole hair regimen to follow lol. I’d tell them what products to use, when to wash their hair, when to do a hair mask, and so on. It got to the point where I was like, this may be something special – this is something I could really do. Everyone would always tell me that I should pursue it and I would always procrastinate because stating a business is scary and intimidating. A lot of research went into my business, it was a whole trial and error process. You only want to provide the best of the best, and when I found products that I really loved – I knew I was ready to share.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So basically I have a job after work. I work in a professional setting (working from home at the moment) but when I punch out, my creative juices starts to flow and that’s when I start my other job. Sometimes I get so inspired, that when I’m working my 9-5, I have to pull out my other laptop to write down my ideas. One laptop I’m working, taking calls, etc. the other, I’m blogging and letting my creativity show. It’s all about balancing still while producing quality work. Sometimes it can get pretty overwhelming, but I think multitasking is something we all need to be good at and I get a lot of practice with it. Doing something I love to do makes it easy. About 15 mins into my “normal job” I’m looking up hair products, that’s why I feel like my job is never done.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting, the first place we’d go is out to eat! Rochester Brunch House have really good daytime food, hence why its always crowded. After that is wine tasting of course, that is literally one of my favorite hobbies. Michigan By The Bottle, is a great spot to try out if you’re trying to figure out what kind of wine you like. Dinner would be at The London Chop House in downtown Detroit, its very elegant and classy – everyone has to visit downtown at least once. There’s many activities to do!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends deserve a lot of credit for pushing and inspiring me. If it wasn’t for their encouragement, I wouldn’t have even started in the first place. I would have still been in the same place today thinking to myself, “should I start the business now? Would that be s good move?” I’m so happy I finally took a leap of faith and did something out of my comfort zone.
