We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marissa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factor behind the success of For the Breast of Us is that the women are their true authentic selves and that shows in the blogs being wrote on the site, the images we show and the quotes from the women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The mission of For the Breast of Us is to help Women of Color affected by breast cancer make the rest of their lives the best of their lives. We work to elevate the experiences of Women of Color through education and support making the road easier for those diagnosed after us.

At For the Breast of Us, we want Women of Color to be empowered with accurate information to make the the best treatment decision for themselves; feel supported despite navigating cultural norms that discourage conversations about health; and be seen, heard and validated in the breast cancer community at large.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Superica, I love Mexican food and this is my go-to spot.

Piedmont Park and the botanical gardens is always a good place to see.

And the Beltline is a cool day trip for anyone visiting the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a few shoutouts! I would first like to thank God for showing me when it was time to move and showing me just how good it can get! Next, I would like to thank my family and friends for always pushing me along every step of the way. I would also like to thank my CoFounder Jasmine Souers for partnering with me to make For the Breast of Us a reality and making sure Brown and Black Women diagnosed with breast cancer have a safe space to share their stories and connect with each other. Lastly, a big thank you to the Baddie Ambassadors! None of this work could be done without them and I am forever grateful that they are willing to stand beside me to do the work we are doing.
