We had the good fortune of connecting with Marion Pugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marion, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There were many men, women, and children who looked for assistance with daily life goals, obstacles, success, and trauma. I wanted to create something where I can serve the community and my family simultaneously. The education field chose me and I wanted to honor the people that determined their worth by the grades that were associated with their performance. I wanted to make sure that people knew their worth before the grade or rating from the outside world. Manhood Mindset started as a radio show where people could call in and voice their opinions and ask questions. The feedback led me down a path where educational consulting and professional speaking both were mandatory aspects of my journey. Hopefully this path will allow me to learn as much as possible while teaching people how to comprehend, communicate, and coexist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been practicing stand up comedy since 2004 but I’ve been telling and writing jokes since kindergarten. I see a direct connection between comedy and mental wellness. Laughter is the medicine we all need and I’m grateful that I found it at a young age. There were many challenges in my younger years and comedy added years to my life and light to my darkest hours. I’ve calmed down storms, built bridges, and restored relationships with humor. I believe that humor is the key to humanity. Being able to find the punch line in all serious situations is a gift that I open daily to stay functional.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend is Big Dave from Decatur so we’d probably get some charcoal and grill some good food. Many of my close friends don’t like public places so we’d just crank up the grill and grab a couple of brews and write some jokes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My foundation begins with my family. I had two hard working parents that allowed me to see the challenges that come with adulthood. I’m mentored by my Grandmother and coached by my Uncles and Aunts. I practice learning this thing called life with my friends, and organizations I serve with. Most of all, the people that are younger than me have taught me the most. Without their trust, I don’t know if I’d be where I am today. Without their willingness to work with me and respecting what I told them, I’m not sure I’d be doing this type of work. My classmates and Cedar Grove Highschool and Georgia Southern University have supported me for over 20 plus years and I honor them as much as possible. Without their support I wouldn’t be here. The people that I’ve lost due to death or lost connections I thank them for their influence. Their void allowed me to find strength to create new ways to communicate and contribute to our world.
