We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Wilson-Terry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Transparency. Vulnerability. It’s the letting folks know that I’m real. They are real. We aren’t perfect. We can come out of hiding. With self and others. This is everyone’s first go at this thing called life. Healing isn’t linear. We are all just walking each other home. Committing to a practice of transparency and vulnerability with self and in community creates that safe space for others to connect deeper to self and others. I consider that a huge factor behind my/our success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am learning to unbecome who I was taught to be and my art shows that. It’s an emerging of myself. The person I am under the person I was taught to be. The imperfect. The messy. The frightened. The dark. The showing up anyway. The love. The light. The emergence and beauty of connection.
It wasn’t easy to get where I am today. I lost my father to murder at the age of 8. That experience could have easily steered me to a negative way of thinking/attracting. I promised to practice the opposite. To live life there’s no tomorrow each day. To revere life and its experiences. May they be up. May they be down.
I went to boarding school so overcoming challenges is the name of my game. 😂 So many obstacles had to be faced head on with no handbook. I overcame them by leaning in. Not turning away.
Lessons I learned along the way included standing ten toes down for what I believed while remaining open to possibilities and learning. Included lessons of forgiveness for self and others. Included lessons of discipline and consistency and self realization. Self inquiry and the courage to push to be better than yesterday.
I want the world to know blackpoweryogi isn’t for perfect people or people who fit into a certain box. It’s for people who are for the people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Atlanta the best weekend to me looks like a shoot down the hooch (weather permitting), a yoga session at Dancing Dogs Yoga, a picnic at Piedmont Park, a drive in at the Starlight, a meal at Pappadeaux, a walk down the beltline, ice cream at Jeni’s, live music. The possibilities are endless truly.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my Mama. Bert. Alberta. She has made such instrumental strides in breaking generational curses for me and our bloodline this lifetime around. She made such drastic changes in her mindset and life to better mine. She has literally raised me to be who I am and continues to be my support and guiding light. Reminding me to follow my heart and supporting/encouraging me to achieve my dreams. Her loving energy is contagious and she makes the world a better place. I love you mama. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for being there and doing the hard things alongside me.
