We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Parrish and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, how do you think about risk?
I think that there are certain risks that are necessary in this line of work, but it’s more important to remain true to your values. At the end of the day, character and integrity matter most to me. I have definitely taken physical risks in my career. When portraying a character, I don’t hold back. I’ve also taken financial risks. But one thing I refuse to do is take risks that will demoralize my character. My values and principles are too important.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My family used to call me dramatic as a child. I hated the term. I felt they were saying my emotions and way of feeling about things weren’t valid. But now that I’ve become an actress, those same things have helped hone me into who I am today. Being able to cry immediately or give off anger or passion required in a scene, really helps me stand out. In addition, the songs I release, as a recording artist, are lyrics that I’ve written out of my own experiences, a lot of times painful experiences. Everything I’ve come thru or overcome has been with God’s grace. Anyone who knows me as a creative should always know that about me. I’ll always give credit to the Lord for gifting me and helping me turn my struggles into inspiration. When people ask me how I’m able to do what I do, that’s the reason why.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I live in Chicago, so first and foremost, you know we’re known for good food lol. For pizza: Lou Malnati’s, Gino’s East, Giordano’s, Home Run Inn and even Beggars Pizza are all decent spots. Tacos are huge here and you can find some good authentic spots. I don’t do spicy food, so I can’t help you with locating those places lol. But they’ve got plenty here. Ooh Wee It Is, soul food spot, has delicious sides. As far as places to visit, there are tons of museums, including Dusable Museum of African American History. Buckingham Fountain is a must on a super hot day. The stream shoots straight up into the air and provides a cooling mist. Beaches are plentiful and be sure to stop by Millennium Park. Goodman Theatre has really thought provoking plays. Truthfully, there’s always something to see here. If you’re bored, you must be in the house.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God, my Lord and Creator blessed me with the gifts and talents I have. I’m truly nothing that I am without Him, first. My husband, Carl Parrish, is a main supporter of mine. He started promoting me, while we were dating, from the moment I told him I sing. Also Asar Freeman & Evans Louissant are two writer/director/producers who saw potential in me and continue to use me in projects, regardless of how far away I’ve gone.
