Meet Maria Howell | Singer/Actor/Voiceover

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose an artistic career, because I always knew what I wanted to do, since the age of 6.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel the thing that sets me apart, is I have learned that diversifying my “career portfolio” works for me, and has kept me employed for a very long time. I love being versatile and learning new things about the business. I consider myself a “forever” student. It has not been easy, but it’s been worth every step of the way. I’ve been challenged many times, not landed acting roles for projects I really wanted, but I’ve never quit. I overcome all my challenges with my faith in God. I know whose I am. Some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way are, “letting go” of trying to do things in my own power. Learning that in the grand scheme of things, God is working it all out and is in total control. I’ve also learned, not to compare myself with anyone. If I spend more time worrying or thinking about others, I might miss out on what God has in store for me to do. Lastly, what I want the world to know about my story is…I have taken the time to know my purpose and calling. As long as I’m aware of that I can journey through this life, with a bit more ease and peace of mind.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s an easy one! I would take my bestie to a coffee shop first…so we could sit and catch up. Mediterranean food (Yafo Kitchen) is one of our faves! We’d definitely visit a museum (Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte, NC) , bead shop, as she loves to string waist beads, bracelets, and the like (@namaste_renee_yoga) on IG. We’d go exercise (yoga or aerobics), shopping…more Mediterranean food. (LOL) Watch a movie (usually a Rom Com), I’d actually watch the movie…she loves to read books and I love audiobooks. So, a bookstore is definitely on the itinerary. We’d have to go see a show/concert. (Middle C Jazz in Uptown Charlotte, NC) We’d visit some of our mentors from our college alma mater (WSSU Rams), and eat more great food with champagne…And top it off with some “swimming pool” action somewhere during the week!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Narrowing my mentors down is most difficult. I have to begin with my Mom…she’s the one who taught me how to sing and harmonize, which established and prepared me for the dedication and work ethic that I have today. Teachers were always an inspiration to me, so much so, that I thought I really considered teaching earlier in my career, but I decided to learn as much about my business and brand, so that I would have more experiences and wisdom to share later. Now, I’m not only a professional performer with over 30 years of experience, but I also coach and teach.
