We had the good fortune of connecting with Mardarius Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mardarius, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It honestly just happened. I remember applying for 60+ jobs while in graduate school and I only received 2 interviews. I can recall feeling so flustered at the thought that I couldn’t find a job in my field even while pursuing a master’s degree. After that experience, I reached out to my mentors, took resume writing classes, updated my resume, and started applying. The business aspect of M3: The Corporate Coach came from sharing my experience after applying to 27 jobs in higher education and corporate America and receiving 19 interviews. My village started reaching out to me asking me to update their resumes and cover letters and after a year or so of freelance writing professional documents, I began M3: The Corporate Coach.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The goal and mission of M3: The Corporate Coach is to close the generational-wealth gap and heighten the socioeconomic status for entry- and mid-level professionals in a variety of industries by providing career development services. My proudest moments have been seeing clients leave their minimum wage jobs to transition to the corporate sector or even getting promoted by their current employer through leveraging their experiences and well-constructed resume to seek upward mobility in their company. Was it easy? Absolutely not! Career development is not the hype of social media or a service everyone seeks out – so initially it was hard securing buy-in from my target audience. However, I started sharing my clients’ success stories on social media. Once I started sharing that my clients were securing corporate jobs at Fortune 500 companies like Google, Apple, Amazon, Entergy, etc, others started to buy-in to the service. The greatest lesson that I have learned to date is to give myself grace. I want things to be perfect all of the time, however, I have learned even some of the best companies face mishaps. I have to continually remind myself that this is a marathon; not a sprint. You will make mistakes, but you will also learn to never make the same mistakes again.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow, so my best friend travels from D.C. often, and when he does we loving going to Old Lady Gang – OLG and the botanical garden. But if I had to make an itinerary for the weekend, hm… Saturday Slutty Vegan… (we’d wait all day because it’s that good) Club: Reign Sunday Brunch at OLG Shopping at Lenox & Atlantic Station Dinner at Ponce – Rooftop
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As an up and coming entrepreneur, I have to first thank my family and friends that have supported the vision and mission of M3: The Corporate Coach even before it became a lucrative business. Special thanks to my mom, dad, brother, and best friends, Gerald and Cameron, for always encouraging me to keep pursuing my dreams even when things got rocky. You all are appreciated. To my 350+ coachees, thank you all for the overwhelming amount of support. Without the support of each of you, M3: The Corporate Coach would not exist today. Thank you for trusting me to enhance your professional documents so that you can “Level Up” in your career. Respectfully, Mardy, The Corporate Coach
