We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have been in the real estate appraisal industry since 2005. I was one of the youngest African Americans to start a Real Estate Appraisal company during the housing recession of 2008. The average age for an appraiser is 50 years to 65 years old and its currently less than 2% African American Appraisers in the US. I am also one of the few in America to have valued a residential property with Fannie Mae.

Today I am a full time author, speaker, real estate consultant. I recognize that most homebuyers, investors, and realtors don’t know much about the appraisal process in Real Estate. Also, most people don’t know what the process is like to become a licensed appraiser. I have published the book “Assessing My Value” to give the public my experience of learning the hardest career in real estate fresh out of college. It was tough to learn such a hard field so young but i truly found my passion. I want the world to know that it is very possible to live the life you want at a young age. Also applying discipline and passion to your life is essential to finding success.

Based on recent studies by the appraisal institute it’s crazy to know that I may have been one of the youngest and few African Americans to start a real estate appraisal company in 2008.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love a lot of places in Midtown and Buckhead. Whiskey Mistress and Blue Martini are some of my favorites. I also love the hookah bars.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout the Thompson family from the city of Little Rock, Arkansas. Felix Thompson is responsible for the majority of African American appraisers in Arkansas. He showed his son the career and his son Phillip is the reason I even got into the real estate appraisal industry. I am very grateful to this family.
