We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcuetta Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcuetta, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
This is such a great question! When I started my business, my thought process was that I want women like me to have a place where they can be seen and centered. I wanted to create a safe haven for women who feel like they are unrepresented, undervalued, unseen, and misjudged to come, take their cape off, let their hair down, and just BE. Far too often, we are asked to wear a mask, to pretend to be something that we are not, to hide our feelings for fear of being stereotyped as something else, so I wanted to create a business that didn’t require anyone to do that.
I wanted a business that focused on wellness and incorporated all the aspects of my professional, and in a lot of ways my personal, life because I know, I have evidence that it works and I wanted to share that with the people that I serve.
The name of the business was developed out of this. I wanted anyone that came in contact with my business to know they are worthy, to trust that small inner voice of wisdom, and to truly have a deeper understanding of what it means to be well.
I also wanted to create an opportunity for myself and other mental health professionals that ripped the ceiling off. I didn’t want to just break glass ceilings, I just don’t want them to exist in my business. So being able to lift as I climbed was always a fundamental element of me starting my own business. I desired to model faith-centered leadership, a lifestyle of self-care and rest, and an ability to far exceed your wildest dreams.
When I first started those were just the things that I imagined, but now it is actually happening in ways that I couldn’t even begin to image. God’s thought process was much bigger than my own when I started apparently.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets us apart is our focus on providing excellent, quality mental health care for Black women by Black women. We are trauma trained providers that ensure we are showing up as our full selves by committing to the same practices and lifestyles that we encourage our clients to have. We walk the walk and I believe that shows up in the work that we do. We also believe in and value healing. We don’t just focus on quick fixes, putting on a bandaid and getting you out the door, we want to really get into those long held wounds and help you heal so you can experience the fullness of what life has to offer.
How did I get to where I am today business-wise?
God.
My current team literally came to me. There are so many offices that I hear talking about difficulty hiring and finding good people, but that has not been my story. I’ve consistently had to turn people away but God has sent the exact people to this team that needed to be here. And then He has sent the exact clients that need to be here.
It has not been easy. The business grew faster than I expected so there are still a lot of things that I’ve been working on creating a foundation around. A lot of changes that happen in a short amount of time because I am constantly learning as a CEO, but through lots and lots of prayer, consulting, and coaching, we’ve generally been able to navigate challenges as they arise.
Lessons I have learned…
1. At some point you have to just stop trying to control everything and learn to trust and have faith. This is something that I knew when I went into starting my business. You see, I started my business the week before the world shut down two years ago. March 7, 2020, I saw my first private practice clients. I wanted to run back to my “stable” job, but God already told me what my next steps were so I just had to have faith. As I started to move forward in growing the business, there were times where I stated to try to rely on my own strength and control everything myself. God quickly reminded me who was in control. And the more I lean into and surrender to His strength and not my own, the easier things become.
2. Manage your money properly from the beginning. Don’t just chalk it up as that is a tax write off. Be really intentional about your finances. Get a budget. Hire an accountant. Sign up for an accounting software. Have separate business bank accounts. Check your money mindset and sign up for courses that support you in this. Poverty mindset and any other money or boundary issues will really interfere with you building a successful business. Putting these things in place will really pay off in the long run.
3. The right fit matters. When you are thinking about your team, you want to make sure they are aligned with your values and you want to encourage them to make sure your business values are aligned with their values. Do the deeper work to understand that foundation and be able to communicate that to other people.
4. Be accountable. Take accountability for your actions and be able to apologize when you don’t do something right.
5. Be focused. It’s so easy to get into the habit of diversifying your income and doing all the things and I’m not saying that those are bad things, but make sure the ONE thing you are well known for is excellent. If you’re a jack of all trades, then you really aren’t mastering anything and that will only cause you more stress in the long run.
What I want the world to know about me and my business is that we absolutely love what we do. And because we love what we do, I like to think we show up to our work in a unique and special way. We are passionate about who we serve and how we can help. So I just want the world to know that we are here and ready to help!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh my goodness. This is so hard! There are so many people that I would want to dedicate this shout out to.
First and foremost my husband. Having a life partner who believes in you and supports you in your wildest dreams is something I didn’t even know that I needed to ask for. He is my ride or die, my companion, the person that I bounce ideas off of, and the one who catches my tears but also tells me “Do not grow weary in doing what is right…” I’m so thankful for his ever growing unwavering support. He doesn’t flinch (at least not in the way that I can see it) when I want to take big risks and reminds me of my capacity when I forget. I literally wouldn’t be able to do this without him.
Second my parents. My mother has always been my biggest cheerleader. No matter what I’ve wanted to do in life, she has always been the one to cheer me on and say, “you can do anything you put your mind to.” She also plays a significant part in this business running and I’m so grateful for the value she instilled in me of believing in myself. My father put the hustle spirit in me. I’ve shifted a bit away from that now because I’ve learned to temper the hustler, but that got me to where I am today. It instilled in me strong values of perseverance, tenacity, resiliency, and work ethic. All things that are required to start a business. So even though I’m all hustled out, the essence is still there and it’s those values that are at the foundation of everything that I do.
Lastly, because we would be here all day if I listed them all, my TEAM, my Prayer Warriors. Hometown, high school friends, college friends and roommates, sorority sisters, colleagues, my STAFF, all of these wonderful people who lift me up and hold me down. They pray with me, they support me, they show up, they encourage me, they like and share my posts, they brag on me, they are everything.
I say all the time that I have the best TEAM there ever was and this is just to name a few. 🙂
