We had the good fortune of connecting with Malika Skerritt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malika, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had childhood eczema that followed me right into adulthood. After many years being prescribed several variations of steroid topicals, I decided I had had enough. I began my journey to a more natural way of healing my skin. The minute I was introduced to shea body butters, I was in love! The only problem was, body butters made my skin shiny, but didn’t offer long lasting moisture. With my eczema comes skin that dries out pretty quickly. So one day I thought, what if I tried my hand at this body butter thing? I set out to create more of a blend between lotion and body butter where I would have the glow of a body butter as well as the hydration of a lotion. I wanted to have skin that looked healthy and moisturized without the “greasy” after feel. Then of course I had to make sure that I would also be healing my skin of eczema flare ups as well. I started thinking about ingredients from past topicals that seemed to help. I ultimately came up with combining sea moss (for its amazing anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties), ceramides (for its ability to create a moisture locking barrier) and oat (for its soothing properties) along with shea, mango and cupuaçu butters. I incorporated some skin repairing oils and voilà! The Sea Moss infused buttercream was born. I was able to create something that not only healed my skin but also delivered long lasting moisture and my skin went from rough and bumpy to smooth and silky. I just knew it could do the same for others!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I absolutely love creating! But if you would have told me five years ago that’s what I would be doing today… ha! I always knew I had entrepreneurship in me, I just alway imagined I’d be behind a desk, in my office. Instead, I am in my lab lol. But getting here was not a walk in the park. I actually started two other businesses prior to this one that didn’t quite go as planned. But with those failed attempts definitely came some lessons. The what not to do and what to do differently. Lots of money spent but I wouldn’t say in vain! Every step led me to where I am and the journey continues.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man! Well I am currently living in Atlanta and the options are endless! There are so many restaurants, parks and sites still on my list so I think I we would go to places and do things that would be new to me as well! We are definitely eating soul food and seafood all week lol! Visiting Sweetwater Creek Park is a must. Maybe hit up a Comedy Club. Definitely attend a Jazz concert at Piedmont Park.
