Meet Malaun Dodson | Professional Wig Maker and Owner of Laced by Laun, LLC.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Malaun Dodson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malaun, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I’ve always been a very self motivated person, but I think my drive and desire to do the work and get things done have helped me succeed.

I don’t think I’m the best planner but I’m a professional to do list crusher! I love setting my daily goals and marking each task off one by one.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Laced by Laun, LLC. specializes in handmade, custom wigs for any and every person that desires to not only look beautiful on the outside but also feel their beauty on the inside.

I make multiple different types of wig units that include u-part, closure, and frontal wigs. All of the Laced by Laun wig(s) can be worn glueless meaning without glue or adhesive which makes for an easy application and removal.

Each wig is constructed using the individual client’s head measurements which ensures a precise, snug fit.

I feel like creating hand made wigs sets me apart because many wig makers are moving towards using the sewing machine. Which is also a great method; but for me, I lost the feeling of doing my craft. It just felt like work at that point and I felt like I wasn’t enjoying wig making anymore. It took lots of thought, prayer, and therapy sessions to realize the magic was never in mass production, it was in using my hands to create something that was inspired by my survival, my fight.

What I am most proud of brand wise is that I have the opportunity to not only sell wigs to those that want to accessories and enhance their beauty, but I get to spread awareness for Lupus and Alopecia while doing it.

I offer custom wig making with the hair included and accept client provided hair for wig to be made. I offer wig reconstruction and make your wig brand new again. I also offer wig hands on courses.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friends to Fells Point for good food and drinks. One of my fave spots in the city is Barocina! The best tacos and margaritas right on the water!

There are also many bars and small boutique shops in the area and some of the best brunch spots. Twist Fells Point is a Mediterranean Restaurant that offers so many food options and BYOB for brunch for only $6.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize all of my past, present and future clients. The continued support is what motivates me daily to keep going and growing! There have been many times where I wanted to give up but I don’t because others are depending on me and desire to support my business and brand.

I also would like to recognize past friends that taught me techniques that helped strengthen my wig making skills. Unfortunately those friendships are no longer, but I’m still very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from others.

I would also like to thank my husband for his continuous support and for always pushing me to keep going and spreading love and awareness for Lupus through wig making!
