We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Makayla, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
For me the end goal looks like me working for National Geographic as an on staff photographer. Nat Geo has been my end goal since high school. I took a Controversial Issues class and we would go through National Geographic magazines often. I would always find both the stories and images to be so captivating, like they demanded your attention, and their work has always resonated with me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a freelance photographer since 2015, and what I’m most proud of are the connections I’ve made and the network of creators I’ve built around me. I’m excited about the work I’m producing this years and the collaborations to come. I got to where I am today by simply being and remaining my authentic self. As someone that sometimes battles with imposter syndrome, it’s not always easy believing in my work, but the validation and consistency make overcoming that a little easier. That goes into the biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way, which is to get out of my own way. I’m my biggest asset and my biggest critic but it pushes me to always produce my best.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are definitely starting the day off with brunch. My friends know I love HobNob Tavern, but breakfast is my favorite meal so I wouldn’t be picky. After brunch maybe we would a couple museums and go thrifting after. I’m not a big club or party person so I hope they aren’t looking for that kind of vibe; unless it’s summer and there’s a festival or day party going on. It’s honestly so hard to pick just a handful of places because Atlanta has so much to offer for every type of person.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout my two favorite professors from college, Dean Cummings and Dr. Kowalewski. They had the biggest impact on me during my final years at Georgia Southern University because I feel like they truly molded me into the professional I am today. Whether I’m shooting for my photography business, shadowing news photographers at work or brushing up on my writing skills, I carry their lessons with me through it all. They were stern, yet listened to my professional goals and desires and aided in my growth and for that I am really grateful.
