We had the good fortune of connecting with Maiya Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maiya, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I had to make was quitting my full time job to pursue my bachelors degree and becoming a full time entrepreneur. I was working at an Urgent care and once my new schedule came out for school my job was not able to work with my schedule. It was such a hard decision, I couldn’t see myself without a job but I only had two semesters left in school and couldn’t see myself giving up on what I worked so hard for. Becoming a full time photographer and student was the best decision because I’ve graduated school and my business flourished.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Rare Images Photography would not be here today if it wasn’t for my uncle Brian Cole. He started me taking pictures back in 2017. I would assist him on his different sessions. He helped me realize that I had a talent and if I nurture it I could become great. It has not been easy getting to the point I’m at today because I’ve stopped plenty of times due to things I couldn’t control. My biggest challenge was myself, I had to stop sleeping on me. In this business I’ve learned that you won’t be everyone’s choice and that’s okay. The clients you’re suppose to have will come to you. I use to get discouraged when people would overlook me but then I realized that What God has for me it is for me and I truly believe that. I want people to know that Rare Images is here to give the best experience. When they come to me for their forever moments they will leave satisfied and feeling good about themselves.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to Neshaszda Z Photography, she has been such a great mentor on my road to success. I attended her photography workshop in August of 2021 and she really dropped major jewels on how to be successful in this business. She’s shown unlimited support and it’s just been an all around blessing to have her as a mentor.
