We had the good fortune of connecting with Mahlory McLean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mahlory, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m originally from Queens, NY, with island roots. My father’s family is from Trinidad and my mother’s family is from South Carolina. My upbringing has impacted who I am today. Growing up in Nyc creates a drive that makes you want more out of life. NY is a place of dreamers, movers, and shakers and no matter where you go you will always have that drive in you. I come from a very loving and large family that is ready and willing to support me in any way they can. In anything you do the love and support of family can make a world of difference. I don’t take that for granted. It helped me become the registered nurse I am today. It also allowed me to not stop there and to make more of what Im passionate about. seeing so many positive role models in my family has made me want to achieve so many goals. My grandmother for example raised 13 children and still earned her doctorate. My father was a captain of the NYC police department. He retired and never stopped working. He did jobs to just get experience in everything. He worked for fed ex, he worked for the airlines, and he sold life insurance. He eventually decided to travel the world and went everywhere. He wanted to know a little bit about everything. He was a big inspiration in my life. He was big on entrepreneurship and creating your lane. losing him just a few short years ago fueled my goal of becoming a business owner. My upbringing has taught me it’s never too late to go for what you want out of life.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a certified maternal and newborn Registered Nurse and I run a private practice called The Mama Coach. As a mama coach, I offer virtual and in-home support to parents who are facing challenges. Whether with feeding or sleep or newborn and postpartum care. What sets me apart from other companies offering sleep support, postpartum care, prenatal classes, etc, is that I am a registered nurse providing you these services. As a Registered Nurse, I offer evidenced-informed education, along with assessment and planning to help parents feel prepared and empowered on their parenting journey.

I am most proud of being able to offer these services to families. Because I am super passionate about postpartum care and the wellness of mother and baby before and after birth. I want to do my part in creating a healthier transition for families. I want to do my part no matter how big or how small to shine the light on maternal and newborn health and the importance of postpartum care.

I was able to get started in this practice because of a wonderful nurse named Carrie Bruno who is the creator of The Mama Coach brand. She created a path for registered nurses like myself to go into private practice doing what they love.

Starting your own private practice is not easy but it’s worth it. There are risks and investments that you have to be prepared for. There’s a lot of planning and prepping that goes into running a business. Every day I have to dedicate time to building my brand. A good lesson that I have learned along the way is to put yourself out there. Don’t be afraid to send those emails, speak to people and promote yourself. Also creating an avatar of what your ideal clientele looks like really puts things in perspective.

What I want the world to know about my brand is that it’s all-inclusive. I am here to offer non-judgmental support to all families. Whether you’re a single mom or dad. Whether you have had multiple kids or you’re a first-time parent. I am here for you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Even though I’m not an Atlanta native, I’ve come to love this city. It has so much to offer. first off it’s the brunch hub in my opinion. I would definitely have to take my bestie to brunch for chicken and red velvet waffles and strawberry mimosas. We love going to Milk and Honey and also thumbs up diner has some of the best pancakes. We would hang out at Piedmont Park or the Georgia Aquarium or catch a movie and dinner at the IPIC.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Mother Reagan. She is the reason behind who I am. She’s always ready to love and support and encourage me. My husband Steven. We’ve gone through so much and overcome so much together.
