We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggie Hudson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggie, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has been a big part of my life. I would rather take a risk and fail than wondering for the rest of my life “what if”. I have been living my life chasing my dreams and that has involved taking lots of risks and overcoming fears. One of my dreams was to live in the USA, so at age 24 I found a job as an au-pair and moved here from Germany. My degree is in Business Administration, but an office job was not for me, so in 1992 I got certified and started my own business as a personal fitness trainer. I was one of the first trainers to travel to client’s homes and ended up with 8 trainers working for me. Fit2Fly started when I could not find a bungee fitness class in Atlanta. I had taken a class in New York and loved it. I earned my teacher certification and invested in the equipment to start my own business. Another childhood dream of mine was performing in the Circus. At age 50, I started taking aerial silks lessons and for the last few years I have been performing at festivals and events. I genuinely believe that “Life is on the other side of fear”.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My passion is teaching and performing. There is nothing better to see your student achieve their goals, whether it is an aerial silks routine they’ve created or a bungee fitness client feeling and looking better while having fun in the class. Making other people happy is what makes me happy – and teaching and performing does just that! It’s been a long road to get here but I’ve always enjoyed teaching. I started over 30 years ago as a group fitness instructor and personal fitness trainer. As a trainer, it bothered me that my clients would see their workouts as a “chore” because I believe exercising should be something fun you look forward to. When I discovered how fun aerial silks is and what a wonderful workout it is, I became a certified instructor so I could have other people enjoy this workout. I was 50 years old when I started aerial silks but I didn’t let my age stop me. Quite contrary: instead I added bungee fitness to my teaching certifications as a perfect cardiovascular workout addition to the aerial silks. And since I also love performing but can’t really run away with the Circus because I have family and kids, I purchased a rig and a group of my aerialist friends and myself are performing aerial shows at festivals and events.
My message to everybody is: Don’t ever give up on your dreams and you CAN find a workout you’ll enjoy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Stone Mountain, The Aquarium, World of Coca Cola and Centennial Park. We would definitely go to the indoor skydiving place iFly, go to Buckhead and eat at the Buckhead Diner. I love the Fox Theater! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I credit my success to my parents for raising me to be independent and a hard worker. I’ couldn’t have done all this without my husband, who has been supporting all my (crazy) ideas and ventures. He is always there for me, whether it is to help set up the performance rig, or taking care of our kids while I’m chasing my dreams. I also thank the aerial community and the encouragement from all my amazing aerial instructors.
