Meet Madie Homan | Creative

We had the good fortune of connecting with Madie Homan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The willingness to work with the client. It sounds simple enough, but besides helping them with my art expertise, at the end of the day it is what they want and what they are looking for. I like to provide many samples to my client based on what they want/their feedback. Sometimes I like a version more over another, but its not always what I want, its what they want. I think that’s what sets me apart from lots of other agencies. Its nice to have a personal connection with your contractor and finding what is best for them is what I strive for.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a wide variety when it comes to my art. Drawings, graphic design, motion design, illustrations… you name it. In college at SCAD Atlanta, I played on the women’s tennis team, as I have had a passion for it for a while. So most of my drawings in school were tennis subject matter.
Since I went to an art college, I was asked from the Atlanta Open (professional tennis tournament) if I wanted to do a graphic design internship for their social media team. Since I was in love with tennis, of course I said yes, which started my freelancing career. I became more familiar with Photoshop and Illustrator as I was able to continue to create art in a design perspective. As my knowledge with design and motion media grew at an agency, I was pursuing graphic design and illustration for other tennis tournaments (Dallas Open & BNP Paribas Open). Though I am talented and hard working at what I do, its really the connections that get you future gigs. I wouldn’t have certain tennis tournament experience without my peers from other tournaments passing my name along. I am grateful to have worked as much as I have in the tennis industry with a skill that I enjoy doing. Two passions coming together.
There are many challenges though that come with working in the creative industry. A lot of the time you need to make compromises about work that is all subjective. I love what I do, but another artist could hate it. A lot of the work that I make as a designer doesn’t get used, and that’s okay, its apart of the job, but you need to have tough skin to get it to the end result of whatever marketer, art director, or client is asking for.
Sometimes though, there is a beautiful moment where you are able to make something however you want without any direction and it turns out amazing and everyone loves it. Especially the person it is made for. That makes this job much more rewarding.
Another challenge that you face is the competition. There are talented designers out there that will charge $10 an hour when they deserve way more, which also makes it hard to get compensated what you deserve. Not to mention landing an interview for a contracting job seems almost impossible now-a-days without a recruiter or referral helping you. Connections are absolutely everything, if you want to work and be successful in this industry. I am extremely grateful for all the connections and friends I have made along the way. I like to pay it forward by mentoring and passing on any jobs I find that might suite someone I know.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, I love to enjoy the weather and seeing views of the city. Going to the East Palisades trail is a spot I love to take my dog to often. Muchacho is my favorite coffee shop/bar/restaurant – the vibes there are awesome. Round Trip Brewing is a spot I can enjoy any day of the week and is also where I hade my engagement party. Johnny’s Hideaway is a club that will never go out of style – one of the most popular club’s in Atlanta, but the best times I have there is on a week night, so I don’t have to wait in line on a weekend. The Woodall is my fiancé and I’s favorite restaurant and their Matcha Cucumber Gimlet is my all-time favorite drink. I love going to the Fox Theater to see a musical or comedian when possible. Playing tennis at Bitsy Grant Tennis Center is always a great spot for my friends and I.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many supporters to thank for the help of my success. My mom and dad have always supported my siblings’ and my dreams for the longest time. The art industry is a tough one to get into and there was always nothing but support from the both of them. My mentors throughout my career path have been extremely helpful and encouraging throughout my journey – from graduating college, to my first job, to the next, and then to my own business today! My biggest shoutout is to my husband-to-be, Will. There are so many inconsistencies with running a business in the creative industry, and he is the one consistency in my day-to-day life that makes it all worth it. If it weren’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be able to do this as there is so much hard work and patience that goes into it. He not only pushes me to do my best, but always puts a smile on my face when days are hard. I am so grateful for him.
