We had the good fortune of connecting with Madam Crystal Butterfly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madam Crystal, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
A principle that I value most is perseverance. When I became an author, I learned that despite popular belief it is not easy to write a book. Things are even worse when it comes to marketing your work. The process can be grueling to the point that you’ll think more than once about quitting. When a person wants to be an independent author or create any other business, they must have a strong will to never give up. Several times I thought about giving up on my business and doing something else. My will to preserver prevented me from letting those thoughts drive me to give up on my dream of becoming a successful author. Thanks to my perseverance, I’m the author of three books, and I will publish three more books by the end of this year.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most proud that I’ve published three books most people don’t complete writing one story. It was not easy to get to where I am today. Like many writers, it is not easy to get attention for my stories. I owe much of my success to the advice I received from other authors. They let me know what to look out for, and how to better advertise my books. Something I learned along the way is that even though it’s good to get critical feedback about your book. You have to still depend on your own judgment about what you want your story to sound like. Otherwise, your vision for your book will be lost. One thing I would like people to know about me is that I am someone who loves creating books because a good story can help ease a lot of stress that comes with daily life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would first take a visiting friend to the High Museum of Art, and then the Varsity. The next day we would go to Swan House and have lunch there. On the third day would definitely go to the Atlanta aquarium, Wonderful World of Coke, and, a Korean Steakhouse named Park 27. The day after that we would go to the CNN building, an ice cream place called The Yard, and get dinner from Six Feet Under. On day six I would take them to the APEX museum and have dinner at Cuts Steakhouse. Final day we would eat at No Mas! Cantina and the Atlanta Symphony.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my mother for supporting me in my career from the beginning. I would also like to thank my friend Shalese Heard owner of Artistic Travel Goddess for helping me to grow my business.
