We had the good fortune of connecting with Luísa Galatti and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luísa, why did you pursue a creative career?
It’s an interesting question ’cause it was never a choice, I simply did it. I’ve been in theater since I was 9 and I never stopped. Not for once I considered not doing it anymore. I naturally get involved in ~way too many~ projects that I’m passionate about. My gut feeling has been guiding me from the beginning and I offer all my commitment to everything I do. Moving to New York was a huge step in my career – I felt like I was reborn. And it was interesting because the pandemic hit right after I moved, so the whole world was in a “pause and reset” mood and that really helped me out. I was able to connect with people, be creative, be stagnant, breathe, think, re-think, make plans… so when things started to pick back up I was ready to go with a bunch of projects under my sleeve. Many projects I did, like ‘Til Morning (a short that I wrote, produced and starred in) and This is Me Eating ___ (an immersive theatrical experience about people’s relationships with food) were born from ideas in the pandemic. And interestingly enough, I felt like the concepts were in enough experimental phase; it was the first time we all had TIME.
Recently, I closed the show Stop Kiss, by Diana Son, at Theater for the New City. I had the honor to be working with a wonderful co-producer and actor, Pamela Torres, as well as Suzanne Di Donna, Christina Loper, Sam McCarthy, Antoni Danieluk and Mamadou Jalloh.
I believe that great film and theater come from the collectiveness of the people making it, and I feel grateful to be surrounded by so many great artists.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Resilience. I said yes to many challenges, sometimes very much aware of what it would mean, sometimes out of pure innocence. My strength comes from the artistic commitment. The artistic need and desire to voice stories lead me to wear different hats and do whatever it takes to make it happen. I can’t do something half-heartedly, it’s just unfair to the message I’m trying to spread. I think I can say that all my projects get gradually more ambitious, and I make myself have to go through these challenges for my own growth. It’s not painless. I’ve had many sleepless nights, I’ve carried set pieces and props in the subway, I yelled and was yelled at – it’s absolutely chaotic. And just like a siamese fighting fish, I almost forget what just happened and jump into the next project. It’s an addiction. I need it. Nobody does this because they want to, we do it because we need it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like to play pool at Carmelo’s. Also, on Wednesday nights you can find me rollerblading around the city with Wednesday Night Skate NYC. But if you’re around, make sure to check in on my Instagram to see if I have something going on: @luisagalatti

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The powerful women from Et Alia Theater, my collaborators from It’s On the Box Collective and all my New York family, my creative soulmates, my core and inspiration: Maria Müller, Ana Moioli, Giorgia Valenti, Ryan Cairns, Cornelius Boeder, Pamela Torres and Christina Loper. I recently produced and starred in Who Were You in New York, a short film by Stella Rea about a young Brazilian woman who comes to New York to reconnect with her mother’s artistic past. It’s a beautiful, poetic film that I’m really excited to share with the world. So I’d like to dedicate this to Stella, one of the most beautiful artists I know.
