We had the good fortune of connecting with Lotus Grove and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lotus, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I think there are two main end goals for Lotus Grove. The first is that we are able to look back at the end of our time making music as a band and feel confidently that we adhered to creating music we are all passionate about, and that the music has grown and developed along with us. It’s important to all of us that the songs come from a place of real relevance to our lives, and that we continue to create honest music that interests us. The second end goal for the band is to tour the records full-time. Ultimately, I think we’re all more passionate about playing live than we are recording in isolation, so a big dream for us is to grow to a point where we can tour this thing and be able to sustain that independently.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our songs are written, recorded, and mixed all in-house, and we’re trying to put out music that talks about our lives and is genuine to our band as individuals. I think we’re most proud of how we’ve carved out a unique sound that highlights the best of what we each do – complex rhythm sections, lyric-forward vocals, dual guitar parts, and the inclusion of synth and piano to round it all out. There are not a ton of bands that pull all those things together, and we’re happy with how it’s come along. We’re just getting started, and there’s a lot we’d like to learn and do yet. I think the biggest lesson, so far, has been the value of communication. We get things done when we’re being honest and communicating well, and the songs are better when we’re all collaborating. The more open we are with each other in the band, the better we are. I think we’d want the world to know that it’s worth sticking to a plan if you care about the outcome – it’s taken a while to get to even just a few first singles, but we feel it all moving now and are loving the outcomes. Stick with it if the future you see in it matters to you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here’s what we’d do:
– Coffee and pastry at little tart in Grant Park
– Visit Acapella Books
– Check out Criminal Records
– Tacos and margaritas at El Tesoro
– See a movie at the Plaza Theater
– Cocktail at the Hotel Clermont lobby bar
Not a full week, but a good time!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Think we owe a shoutout and massive thank you to Glass Animals. There are many bands that have inspired our songwriting and production, but Dave Bayley of Glass Animals has had a particularly profound influence on Tyler, our keyboard player and producer; I don’t think any of this happens without that influence.
