We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Haas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work/life balance is in constant flux. I have come to the conclusion that the more I grasp at balance, the more it eludes me. Just being in the present moment and accepting what it offers me with equanimity is the closest I can come to balance.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a mixed media, multidisciplinary, assemblage artist. My work has evolved by attempting to teach myself new things, and trying to correct the mistakes I made along the way. I try to make art that is meaningful, and accessible, and also open to interpretation. I love working with Items from nature, reclaimed materials, and related religious iconography. It was not easy getting where I am today, but the experiences that shaped me are invaluable contributions to my work today. I am lucky to have had the support of family, friends, and fellow creatives. I hope that my work enables the viewer to find some thing they can relate to, and reminds them how we are all connected.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Après Diem for food, atmosphere, and people watching. The Beltline and so many restaurants and venues along it. Live music at Blind Willie’s, Variety Playhouse, The Earl, The Eastern. Ponce City Market and The Clairmont Lounge. South River Studios, Brickworks Gallery, Swan Coach House Gallery, APG, the High Museum, and whatever art pop-ups are going on. Piedmont Park, Colony Square, Midtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people and influences that have gotten me where I am today it is hard to select only a few. With regard to my shrine artwork, my greatest influence getting me started on that path was Joseph Campbell’s book ” The Power of Myth” and the accompanying PBS series facilitated by Bill Moyers. With regard to the work I have done on the Nest Series, the artist Kate Breaky has influenced me greatly. My first patron was the multi-talented Andrew Sheldon, who has discovered his own artistic journey along the way.
