We had the good fortune of connecting with LlaiNie B and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LlaiNie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a creative mind. Besides writing, painting, dancing and acting I’ve always drawn pictures or doodled all over my books or on pieces of paper laying around, creating looks on body figures. I’ve never wanted the same things as everyone else. If the crowd all had on a certain brand, I would shy away from that brand. I’ve always tried to alter or decorate my clothes or accessories just to differentiate my outfits from others. It was a natural direction for me. I have the same point of view ’til this very day. Creating my own gear, starting my own trends. I love being set apart from the majority.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I’m a designer/seamstress that loves to constantly transform ideas into garments, accessories, etc. I try to make things that doesn’t necessarily look like anything you’ve seen before or remix something to make it better in my opinion. It’s been a struggle navigating this business but the key to success is to keep going. I know it’s sounds cliché but it’s the truth. I still have a ways to go to get where I want to be but I’m not quitting. A lesson I’ve learned over the years is to NOT procrastinate on an idea that comes to you. I believe that when an idea comes to you, you should execute it because sure enough someone else will fall on that idea and you’ll be kicking yourself when you see your idea executed by someone else and it becoming popular and spreading like wildfire. It has happened to me SO MANY TIMES! Lol and I’m sure others can relate. It’s not a fun lesson to learn. I want the world to know that I strive to have a brand that people come to for exclusive pieces and always have a positive experience with the process, the product and myself.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my mother and my grandfather. My mom has always been my foundation and allowed me to be myself, unapologetically. Without that freedom, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My grandfather (RIP) was always my cheerleader. He never stopped promoting my talents, even when I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue down this path. That support always kept me boosted.
