We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Sawyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since I was very young, I have always been drawing, painting, crafting and creating. Making art and creating beautiful things is just something I’ve always done. When it came to a career, I just couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I went to art school and got a degree in photography. I worked for several companies as a photographer and then creative director for some time before deciding to work for myself. Cookies came about kind of by accident. As many of us do, I baked with my mom and grandmothers when I was growing up. I started decorating fancy cookies as a hobby, for Christmas parties and my son’s birthdays, and soon had some friends ask to buy from me for their parties.
What should our readers know about your business?
Again, starting this cookie business was a bit of a happy accident. For years I worked for others and companies because I didn’t feel I had the self-discipline to run my own business and make my own schedule. I didn’t realize how much that viewpoint was also holding me back. Now that I’m doing something I have a passion for, the schedule and the motivation have come pretty naturally. I really pride myself on Sawyer Sweets cookies being a bespoke and totally custom experience. I love that many of my customers have trust in my design and decorating abilities and we’re always able to work together to make a great product that makes them happy and sets their events apart. I’m always flattered that something I created has a part in their special occasions and memories.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m such a mom… and most of my friends are moms with children my age. We’d definitely be hitting up the aquarium. It really is magical and so educational. I think we’d visit the both the Battery and The Works. Both have Fox Bros. BBQ! But really, there are so many good restaurants and the kids have plenty of area to play and run around.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I’d say my mom and grandma. My grandma was always involving me in all the creative things she did- baking, knitting, taking millions of slide photos on trips and then sharing the slideshow with us. And she was always open to supporting my creative process whether that was buying me art supplies or letting me write on her typewriter for hours. My mom really never told me that there was anything I couldn’t do. I’d say I wanted to try something and she really did her best to support me and make a go at it. Not everything I wanted to try worked out, and I’m sure she knew it wouldn’t but she didn’t really shut me down. Secondly, my husband. Similarly, he’s always been supportive of new things I’d like to try, projects I design and then ask him to help me build. And with Sawyer Sweets, he’s been my biggest fan – though that may just be all the cookie tasting he gets to do.
